More than the Love Boat: the marriage cruise
aramis-112-80488027 March 2023
Those few episodes where the Love Boat takes real cruises gives the whole game away. The real ship looks nothing like the usual sets.

On the real ship the accommodations look more cramped, with low ceilings; TV show sets rarely have ceilings. The companionways look about the same but nothing else does.

Nevertheless the real cruises have movie-length episodes and impressive casts.

Debbie Reynolds and Gavin McGavin are a couple behind some sort of cockamamie marriage contest while their own marriage sails near dissolution.

Gopher joins Ann Jillian and Dawn Wells as contest judges.

Meanwhile, Peter Graves is a concerned father trying to break up his son's forthcoming nuptials.

Naturally, 1970s TV stars peep in. Donny Most and Erin Moran from "Happy Days." Ted Knight from "The Mary Tyler Moore Show." From the early 1980s, Charlene Tilton from "Dallas." Back then, these were names to conjure with.

So sit back, ignore the fact that the real ship looks nothing like the usual sets, and voyage with the has-beens. Also ignore the fact that in tropical climes Ted Knight is sweating like a pig. If pigs do sweat. I have yet to determine that.

Tropical Tilting with Tilton

Warning: Spoilers
The Island Princess is going to the Virgin Islands! Darren McGavin, the titular promoter, is hosting a 'Marriage-A-Thon' contest on board. There's 50k on the line in the contest. (I could use that!) If 'diaper changing' is one of the games, I have no chance of winning! Too bad Darren is secretly feuding with wife Debbie Reynolds. (Her daughter may be Princess Leia, but Debbie has the force in that green swimsuit!) Gopher has lined up a cooshy job as a judge. His co-judges are Dawn Wells and Ann Jillian. Ted Knight and Rue McClanahan have been engaged for 10 years. Will they finally tie the knot? Peter Graves is here to stop his kid's marriage. Joanie loves Chachi, but she's here smooching Peter's son. Will the young couple make it through the mom-and-dad roadblock? Donny Most is back as his character from the Alaskan cruise, where he made a solid connection with Julie. He's feuding with friend Brian, but tiny Charlene Tilton is waiting for him because she's engaged to this Brian guy. (Not if Danny can stop it! He knows all about this Brian!) Vicki thinks the idea of a husband is 'yucky.' Well, Vicky, you might be right, but the entire show's premise is based around it. Our cameraman is working extra hard to keep Charlene Tilton in frame with her costars. Eat your heart out, Gilligan - Dawn Wells looks good in that tube top. Doc and Gopher have a nice jog around the top deck. Tropical winds are the enemy to Ted Knight's hair. With the way the shots are set up now, I think we've gone to wireless microphones. There's an incredible shot where Danny and Charlene are talking, with the ship moving, and the city sliding behind them. See you for part 2 of this double-length episode!
