One of the best Love Boat cruises
aramis-112-80488026 March 2023
Bachelor Bill Daily can only get a job with a firm he likes if he's a family man (try getting away with that today's hothouse atmosphere where families are under fire!) Invited to join a cruise with his prospective bosses (John Hillerman, Natalie Schaeffer) he rents a family (consisting of Roz Kelly, Patsy Kelly and Jackie Earle Hailey). What could go wrong?

Ginger Rogers plays (what else?) a legendary actress who runs into a critic (Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.) with whom she has a long-standing feud.

Gunilla Hutton ("Petticoat Junction," "Hee Haw") and Larry Linville are a couple desperate to locate a half-million in diamonds they failed to smuggle ashore on a previous cruise.

The mother of one of the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders thinks her daughter and her own new boyfriend (William Windom) are falling in love. Well, what middle-aged man wouldn't fall for the whole squad? I graduated high school the year this aired so I was too young for them then; but from my current perch 40 years later I don't see a clinker in the cord. Go for it.

Ginger Rogers, who should have hung it up a long time ago, warbles "Love Will Keep Us Together" and the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders dance to the Love Boat theme.

Impressive, if typically unusual, Love Boat cast; full of old TV hands, rising stars who never rose, current (as of late 1970s/early 1980s) TV biggies and the washed up who are coasting on their names. But for someone like me, who loves good old movies, the latter are often the most welcome.

This is a superb extra-long episode of its kind. Even the "serious" story (which I normally fast-forward through) isn't too annoying.

Ginger Does Dallas
WalterKafka25 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Debbie does The Love Boat? Yes, the Dallas Cheerleaders are here for this two-part episode. It's a charity cruise (but the jiggle is free.) 'IF we could harness all that energy, we wouldn't have to worry about a fuel shorage.' Five plots! This is stuffed! The ship has already put Vicki to work. Bill Daily has hired a family to impress his boss and get a job. The boss is played by John Hillerman. Jackie Earle Harley is the teenager. He hurls butter at Julie's face. Splat! Roz Kelly is back as the would-be wife. Grandma is a lush. His family is really getting in the way of getting the girl. Ginger Rogers - still beautiful - is here as an classic movie star. Douglas Fairbanks is Ginger's rival. He wants her for her new musical. I bet they'll fall in love! Larry Linville and his gal previously stashed some diamonds in a cabin. Now they're back to pick them up. Problem! The cabin now belongs to Gopher! Gunhilla Hutton is all over Gopher. (I don't see the poster of Hayley Mills in Gopher's cabin.) One of the cheerleaders is being chased by a man. Her friends throw him into the pool. Doc sweeps in for the rescue. Wendy is a cheerleader. Her mom is here. William Windom is the mother's boyfriend. He might just be after the daughter. 'He's a Pittsburgh Steelers fan,' mom tells daughter. Isaac mentions his recent writing and shows Larry Linville his manuscript. See you on Part 2.
