Not Perfect, But Great Scenes in It, Viv Looks FAB

Yes, I know - the plot of this one is quite preposterous - Lucy takes a job as a maid so she can afford her OWN maid - but darn if it doesn't boast a snappy script (at least until the final act) with some genuine LOL moments. It's a refreshing surprise after a string of so-so offerings in Season 3.

Vivian looks fantastic in this episode, from the flattering royal blue sleeveless dress she wears in the opening scene, to the blue 2-piece later on, and her hair is perfectly styled in a loose flip. Lucy doesn't look too shabby here either.

The highlight of the episode is the interview scene where Lucy meets her new boss, played wonderfully by Norma Varden. (Varden excelled in these rich-lady roles -- from a daffy semi-regular one on HAZEL to a snootier characterization on BEWITCHED). While reading aloud a glowing letter of recommendation written by Viv, Varden cuts Lucy off just in time for the redhead to avoid a huge, offending faux pas that would have likely cost her the job. The dialog is crackling throughout and the scene ends perfectly with a great sight gag involving a meat locker.

Kathleen Freeman plays the maid whom Lucy is hiring for herself, and while their scene is not as funny as Varden's, it's still good. (Check out the chicken dinner Lucy brings Freeman - the pink box is identical to the cake boxes we saw in "Lucy's Contact Lenses").

The episode loses a couple of stars for the finale. Lucy panics when she realizes the dinner party she's serving at is for the Danfield Ladies' Art Society - the very group she's trying to impress - which started the whole charade in the first place! She and Viv don very minimal disguises as they serve each course of the meal and it all ends too abruptly.

Still, this one's a nice surprise after a few dull episodes in the run.

Amazingly Convoluted

Warning: Spoilers
Hair-brained schemes is one thing, but this episode just throws things all out of proportion. Lucy wants to impress rich society women who all happen to have maids, so she has to work as a maid so she can hire a maid for herself to impress these ladies. It's all just a bit too far-fetched.

On top of this, we get Kathleen Freeman as the maid she hires, essentially reprising the same thing on I Love Lucy when Lucy hired a maid to help out with Little Ricky and she ended up doing more work than before, but this time the subtlety of Lucy Ricardo's intimidation is lost with Freeman, nevermind Freeman appeared on several earlier episodes as a neighborhood buddy, when she enters here, it's to 'special guest star' applause.

So now what will the punchline be? Lucy pandering to her maid or being the rich woman's maid? For some strange reason, I couldn't help but ponder this was only something Ball would know about how rich women deal with their help.

In the end, the final 'joke' is so extremely contrived, it's amazing to behold, with Lucy and Viv cackling out some clichéd tunes of other nationalities, and wearing bizarre little 'disguises'.

But it's an incredibly weak plot; I have to be a maid so I can hire a maid.
