Burnett's Debut on a Lucille Ball Series
kgraovac15 November 2023
Lucy advertises for a roommate and after reviewing an application that sounds "refined and dignified" she settles on librarian Carol Bradford - a shy, mousy young woman whom Lucy and Mary Jane try to coax out of her shell.

With two queens of comedy sharing the stage you'd expect a laugh riot, but while this episode has its' moments, it's not a series classic. Once again, Ms. Ball steps aside and gives the spotlight to the guest star.

Burnett goes overboard - even Lucy says she "laughs like a hyena" - and the sneezing and hiccups bits are only mildly amusing. The funniest parts are when Carol's voice drops an octave and she delivers some of her lines in a "trucker" tone.

Lucy looks great in the party scene wearing a yellow sheath dress where Carol literally lets her hair down and belts out "Hard-Hearted Hannah".

The pairing should have resulted in something funnier, but it's interesting to see Lucy and Carol working together a year before the start of the latter's CBS variety show.

Burnett also appears in the following episode, but this is the better of the two.

Carol Burnett Sings and Shines
Enrique-Sanchez-5614 May 2017
This is one of the most memorable appearances Carol had on television.

When she sings, wait, she belts out, "Hard-Hearted Hannah" it still resounds 50 years later in my memory and in the annals of television entertainment as the one of the funniest and most surprising performances.

Her comedic timing was already legendary in the classic "Gary Moore Show". Even then, you knew she would be an enormous star. I thank her for all of that and her wonderful career which lay ahead of this for years to come.

Best classic show episode ever

My mom has a VHS with this episode in it. I would watch it all the time when I was little. Funny episode. This gets quite more amusing though since this episode aired the same year my mom was born. Almost 20 years old, I still watch this show online. Both me and mom are Lucy and Carol fans. Favorite Lucy show episode.

That Was Joe Pesci In This Episode?
richard.fuller125 August 2006
Warning: Spoilers
That's quite a way to go, I must say! Playing a bit part on a 1960s comedy show to Raging Bull, Goodfellas and Home Alone.

He had no lines, I'm sure, but the two Carol Burnett episodes apparently are available on tape or DVD, whichever you can manage, so be sure to try to see Mr. Pesci there.

He must be in the band that turns up at the end.

Carol Burnett and Joe Pesci. So close, yet so far.

Other than that, the distinction of the episode was supposed to be the queen of comedy meeting the princess of the pea, so to speak (those familiar with Burnett's career know what I am referring to).

Carol managed her bit fairly well, tho Lucy, attempting to hand over the spotlight, hardly manages to meet Burnett. In the end, Lucy simply plays some sort of straight man.
