Make it hurt but don't kill em

***SPOILERS*** Running a bookie operation under the noses of the Chicago Police Department has been going will for hoodlum and armature tennis player Chip Rantell,James Garvin, that's until his strong arm man Andrew Jerecki,Steve London, got carried away with his work. Putting gambling junkie Collins, Bart Carlin, in the hospital on life support as well as working over and murdering Martha Winslow had the police in the person of Let. Det. Frank Ballinger, Lee Marvin, get on the case.

This bookie operation has desperate housewives needing extra cash to pay their bills let Rantell's hoods use their phones to take bets from their homes making tracing his bookie operation almost impossible. Paying the women, who keep this from their husbands, $50.00 a week for the use of their phones worked until the brutal and Neanderthal-like Jarecki got into the act. The big brake that came was Barbara Sullivan, Mary Webster, who in desperation to pay her husband injured ballplayer Champ Sullivan's hospital bills, that the $50.00 a week came in very handy, came clean.

***SPOILERS*** It was a combination of Jerecki's brutal arm twisting tactics and Barbara coming clean about the phone operation that Rantall was using that broke the case of the underground bookie operation wide open. With the lid blown off and Rantell about to check out of town Let. Det. Ballinger and his boss Capt. Grey, Paul Newlan, made sure his escape plan would fall apart and go up in flames . Just like his bookie operation did.
