Freon to make a steel latch brittle is sort of a real thing. For every steel alloy there is a temperature called the ductile to brittle transition temperature, get below that and the steel can snap. For some steels this is about -20°F, for some about -70°F or even lower. Freon generally could only get something down to -22°F.
