• Magnum : [finds Carrie on his bed]  Excuse me.

  [Carrie screams] 

  Magnum : Don't do that.

  Carrie Reardon : [hysterical]  Don't you ever knock?

  Magnum : In my own house?

  Carrie Reardon : Oh! You're - you're probably wondering w-hat I'm doing here.

  Magnum : Probably. Inasmuch as you were almost run down by a car two hours ago.

  Carrie Reardon : I just needed a place... to get away from everything... everyone. Reporters, police... my mother.

  [walks over to couch, sits down, takes sip of beer - straight from the bottle] 

  Carrie Reardon : You don't like me much, do ya?

  Magnum : You don't let yourself be very likable. Which makes it hard for me to try and do my job!

  [sits down as well] 

  Magnum : Tell me something. How many players have you humiliated so far in this tournament?

  Carrie Reardon : You mean 'eliminated'.

  Magnum : No, I mean 'humiliated'. Like the way you practice with Kenny Phelps. What were you trying to prove to him?

  Carrie Reardon : That's none of your business!

  Magnum : Look, all I'm saying, Carrie... is tennis is not a game for you anymore.

  Carrie Reardon : You're right about that. Look... I'm an eighteen-year-old kid... and I'm a corporation! I got a board of directors, three lawyers, two accountants, two agents, a business manager! And they're all a bunch of jerks who wear suits and ties and talk in some language no one else can even understand! And now I've got some weirdo after me... who's trying to kill me or something. And I don't even know why. I mean, what have I done that's so terrible? Except wanna play tennis! That's all I've ever wanted to do, is play tennis! And now I hate it! I mean, I hate it!

  Magnum : Why don't you quit?

  Carrie Reardon : Just walk out on everything?

  Magnum : Yeah.

  Carrie Reardon : It's not that easy, Magnum. I've got obligations, responsibilities.

  [Magnum drops his head] 

  Carrie Reardon : Besides... my Mom would kill me!

  Magnum : Carrie... it's your life.

  Carrie Reardon : No. Nothing... is mine anymore.

  [tearfully, she puts her arms around him, cradling her head against his chest] 

  Magnum : Carrie...

  Higgins : [appears on the landing above]  Magnum...

  [sees the young girl with her arms around him] 

  Higgins : Magnum!

  Magnum : Higgins!

  Higgins : My God, man, have you completely lost your mind?

  Magnum : Don't start with me! It's not what you think. It's not even close!

  [to Carrie:] 

  Magnum : Tell him.

  [she looks up at him dreamily] 

  Magnum : What... what the hell are you barging in here for anyway?

  Higgins : It was quite by accident. But now you can thank me for sparing you the indignity and disgrace of compromising *what's left* of your reputation.

  Magnum : Higgins!

  Higgins : Rick called. He said to meet him at the club, on the court. That it's important.

  Magnum : Why didn't he call me here?

  Higgins : He said the *phone* was off the *hook.*

  Magnum : [realizing who's to blame, looks down at Carrie]  Bedroom?

  [she shrugs, and he nods up at Higgins] 

  Higgins : The bedroom.
