Somewhat hurried ending of the eight season series
CCsito20 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I watched the series when it started in 1980 and all the way to its eighth season. The show led its time slot at 8 PM (CBS) on Thursday night from 1980 to 1984. NBC then added the "Cosby Show" as competition beginning in 1984 and the audience slowly decreased over the last four years for Magnum, P.I. By the 8th season, the producers were likely looking to finish up the series as a full season of episodes were not produced. There are some rather different plot twists that make for a not well developed finale for the series. There is an attempt to provide answers to several issues since the start of the series such as the identity of Robin Masters, what Magnum expects to do after quitting as a P.I., and what happens to his buddies. Some of the scenes in the Part 1 of the finale were shot at the Naval Academy in Annapolis and the National Mall in Washington DC which is close to where I worked back in 1988. Many viewers voiced some disappointment with the finale and I agree to some degree. But, having watched the series as it originally aired back in the 1980s, the ending with Magnum walking along the beach with his daughter and rejoining the Navy was a suitable end for the TV character.

My rating is partly due to the sound track. Although only three artists were mentioned: Smokey Robinson Rononald White writers of the song attributed to The Tempations.

I did enjoy this episode very much! I wish The blues guitar solos' artist, and Otis Reading, singing Try a Little Tenderness were mentioned.

The beginning of the end

Warning: Spoilers
Here we are, the first part of the two part finale, Resolutions. It's quite reflective, with Magnum checking out the military sights and visiting his family and meeting his grandfather for the first time which was kind of out of the blue.

Anyway, Magnum quite predictably does the beast with two backs with Michelle, the journalist who is a target of some deranged maniac. One TV trope is that Magnum stayed awake after doing the deed, but Michelle didn't, as though the guy has more staying power post-deed.

I can't wait to see Part II. Strangely, Mac isn't in this episode even though he's listed in the imdb as being in this.

I have to agree this was a huge miss

Until now I had never seen the finale of the series (gotta level re-runs) and I was so disappointed. Frankly from the beginning of season 7 I've been disappointed with the writing so I can't be too surprised with the conclusion. I'd have to dig deep to figure out if it was directors, writers, or something else that caused the change, but the stories just changed. This actually happened to a lot of shows in the 80s where they tried to change what had been working and totally missed.

The story tried to pull together many things of the series, but threw in things that were completely new (grandfather). It's sad because for what was an exceptional series to have fallen in the end is sad.
