- TriviaThe plane which Mannix crashed in (N2203P, 1956 Piper Apache PA-23-150, s/n 23-813) was owned by Aer-O West Aviation in Corona, CA and was flown by flight instructor, Vince Marzo. The Apache is still airworthy and owned by a flight corporation in Bossier City, Louisiana.
- GoofsGreg Morris picks a whole bunch of small berries and hands them all to Mannix. They are small enough to fit in both his hands---unseen. The next frame, Mannix has a huge green grape in between his teeth. Besides size discrepancy and all, grapes don't grow on tree branches.
- Quotes
Luke Whitney: [after saving Joe from a rattlesnake] Man, you're getting to be a real nuisance.
Joe Mannix: Thanks.
Luke Whitney: It's the least I could do... with your gun.
Joe Mannix: My gun in exchange for the compass and canteen.
Luke Whitney: Sooner or later, everybody gets cheated.
Joe Mannix: My turn, right?
Luke Whitney: Look on the bright side, now it's behind you.
Joe Mannix: Why all this hide-and-seek?
Luke Whitney: I checked your wallet after I patched you up, Mannix. Your line of work and my uniform doesn't exactly make lasting relationships.
Joe Mannix: I don't suppose they just let you walk out.
Luke Whitney: Oh, no, that's against the rules.
[referring to the canteen Joe has]
Luke Whitney: Anything left in that?
[Joe hands Luke the canteen]
Joe Mannix: A man on the run...
Luke Whitney: [hears rustling sounds] Hold it.
[the rustling sounds stop]
Luke Whitney: Thought I heard something. Probably a deer.
[drinks from the canteen]
Joe Mannix: As I was saying, a man on the run doesn't usually stop to help someone.
Luke Whitney: Look, that plane almost came down on me. I fixed your arm a little. Big deal.
Joe Mannix: That's not all. The canteen, the compass, arrow. Why?
Luke Whitney: I was raised in the mountains. I figured you for a city dude. You needed 'em more than I did.
Joe Mannix: Yeah.
[gets up]
Luke Whitney: [aims Joe's gun at him] Easy.
Joe Mannix: You, uh, figure I get the chance, I'll give you trouble.
Luke Whitney: Will you?
Joe Mannix: No. But if I change my mind, I'll let you know.
Luke Whitney: [chuckles] Okay. Look, we're not doing any good around here. Can you travel?
Joe Mannix: Yeah.
Luke Whitney: Let's go.
[they start to walk]
Joe Mannix: Being that you know my name... maybe I ought to know yours.
Luke Whitney: Lucas Whitney. Most folks call me Luke.
Joe Mannix: Well, thanks for all your help, Luke.
Luke Whitney: Mannix, I'm not sure I helped you at all. Maybe just the opposite. Anyone seen talking to me could get himself killed.
A couple of things are a stretch - lawmen with bad accents and worse morals, a farmer with an escape system, Joe's bad luck in crashing and getting into a situation with a convict on the run. You either buy it or you don't and some reviewers didn't.
I like the episode as a change of pace but there are many better outings for this show. If you're tired of looking at the backlot as background in most Mannix episodes, check this out. You'll enjoy Gail Fisher's acting if nothing else.
Joe gets to keep the retainer, right?
