No turkey lurkey time this Christmas.

Warning: Spoilers
Walter's not going to be looking for the union label when he finds out that his employees are planning to unionize at the holiday party that Maude and Walter throw at their house. The way that Maude arranges for Walter to find out isn't taken seriously at first, but the shock threatens to send Walter off the wagon.

While the liberated Maude understands the need for a union, Walter isn't as understanding and becomes very depressed. This has some very funny individual vignettes but the plotline is rather distracting from the humor and the holiday spirit even if it is an important issue. Walter's feeling betrayed, and tries to explain why a union won't work for his business.

A lot of humor surrounds Maude's getting everybody's name wrong, yet the atmosphere gets continuously darker as the episode goes on. Helen Camp, who plays one of the guests, earlier appeared as a patient in the psychiatrist's office in the premiere episode. Patsy Kensit is another returnee as well.

The First Christmas Episode

Walter invites all of his employees over to celebrate Christmas Eve but they tell him they are going to join a union.

The first of several Yuletide episodes and this is a good one. It begins with the group happily singing carols. Maude has funny encounters with her mailman (Jack Grimes) who comes around looking for a gift. Florida has a funny joke about the 3 wisemen. When Walter finds out about the union he is angry but Maude thinks it's great. Walter is ready to fire everybody but soon realizes that he has to accept it.

Classic TV Xmas Countdown Episode #70
kgraovac21 December 2023
The Findlay's host Walter's company Xmas party, where his employees drop a bombshell: they have unionized.

MAUDE is my favorite sitcom ever but it could never hit a bullseye with an Xmas episode the way ALL IN THE FAMILY did. This is a tepid offering that could have taken place without the holiday backdrop. Woodrow Parfrey plays the slimy Gus and his backstabbing bit towards Walter is overused.

The funniest parts have nothing to do with the main plot. Maude ticking off the mailman, who's come knocking for an Xmas bonus, and her comeuppance when she slams the door in his face; and Maude finding the horny couple under all the guest's coats on her bed. "Loose Edna" is played by Bill Macy's real-life spouse Samantha Harper. She would play a similar character in the 1975 Xmas episode as well. Eddie Carroll, the guy she is seen making out with - would be paired with her again in '75.

MAUDE is a stellar series, but this is one of the weakest episodes. 5/10.
