Walter's not going to be looking for the union label when he finds out that his employees are planning to unionize at the holiday party that Maude and Walter throw at their house. The way that Maude arranges for Walter to find out isn't taken seriously at first, but the shock threatens to send Walter off the wagon.
While the liberated Maude understands the need for a union, Walter isn't as understanding and becomes very depressed. This has some very funny individual vignettes but the plotline is rather distracting from the humor and the holiday spirit even if it is an important issue. Walter's feeling betrayed, and tries to explain why a union won't work for his business.
A lot of humor surrounds Maude's getting everybody's name wrong, yet the atmosphere gets continuously darker as the episode goes on. Helen Camp, who plays one of the guests, earlier appeared as a patient in the psychiatrist's office in the premiere episode. Patsy Kensit is another returnee as well.
