Quotes

  • [first lines]

Bret Maverick : [narrating]  I wasn't going anywhere in particular at that time, except, maybe, into bankruptcy. In the last town, I'd put all my faith into two pair, and three tiny little deuces have wrecked my faith... and my bankroll.

  • Bret Maverick : Suppose we try to get that forty-five thousand dollars back. Ought a be around somewhere.

Mayor Pembroke H. Hadley : It may be. You think you could find it?

Bret Maverick : Well, I can try... for a consideration. Shall we say, fifty percent of what I recover?

Mayor Pembroke H. Hadley : One-tenth would be a considerable amount of money.

Bret Maverick : As my old Pappy used to say, "Gentlemen don't haggle over money," so let's don't haggle. Shall we say twenty-five percent?

  • Tinhorn : Are you acquainted with blackjack?

    Bret Maverick : We've met.

  • Johnny Rain : Come on, Mr. Maverick. I know a shortcut. We'll head 'em off at the pass!

Bret Maverick : What'd you say?

Johnny Rain : I said "We'll head 'em off at the pass."

Bret Maverick : That's what I thought you said.

  • Bret Maverick : Well, you're not making me sheriff?

Mayor Pembroke H. Hadley : You got something against it?

Bret Maverick : Well, naturally, I'm on the side of the law, as a rule. But authority has a tendency to weigh me down.

Mayor Pembroke H. Hadley : How does bein' a deputy affect your weight?

Bret Maverick : It's less of a burden, I might be able to bear up under that.

  • Johnny Rain : [after Millie shoots him]  Mr. Maverick, she never loved me at all.

Bret Maverick : Well, I had a dim suspicion that she wasn't exactly head over heels.

  • Bret Maverick : She's your girl?

Johnny Rain : Yeah, we got an understandin' that one of these days we're gonna reach an understandin'.

  • Bret Maverick : You don't care for liquor?

Johnny Rain : Well... it's got a tendency to give me the cobbly-wobbles, makes me kinda fuzzy. The worst thing is, once I start, I can't stop. But I promised my girl I'd drink, so I gotta.

Bret Maverick : You promised her you would drink?

Johnny Rain : She says when her old man was on the wagon, he used to beat up on her mother. It's left its mark on her.

Bret Maverick : A few on her mother, too, I suspect.

  • Bret Maverick : There were two Johnnys. One of them wore a happy smile and loved the world. The other wore a bandana and robbed it.
