Maverick: Arizona Black Maria
jcolyer122924 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
An Indian tries to scalp Bart to prove his manhood, but Bart keeps getting rescued. Joanna Barnes is a lady prisoner. A "black maria" is a covered wagon used to transport prisoners, and Bart calls it a "traveling hoosgow" "Hoosgow" is a Mexican Spanish word for "jail." Lots of humor! Bart and Joanna kiss, and she wants Bart to help her escape. He removes her ball and chain long enough for her to bathe, and she gets away. She returns to free the others, then they all come under attack. Joanna played in 5 episodes of Maverick. The Indian's persistence in trying to scalp Bart is silly, but it comes to a head when he tries to scalp a sleeping man and the man is wearing a toupee.

Bart the jailer

Things got a bit too silly for me in this story. In this episode poor Jack Kelly is first victimized by an Indian brave who likes his scalp. Thinks that Kelly's mane will look just right decorating his lodge. Then when he's rescued he's robbed of his canteen of water by his bottom feeding rescuers.

Real rescue comes with Alan Hale who is driving a prison wagon over the desert with four prisoners, Joanna Barnes, John Holland, Don Barry, and Terrence DeMarney. Why Hale was doing this without help God only knows but Kelly is grarteful and agrees to help.

Of course they're all full of tricks especially Barnes and a Maverick always gets fooled by a woman. This one got more silly than funny though.

Not one of the better episodes.
