Quotes

  • [Maverick out-maneuvers a slippery gambler to win a $10,000 bet]

Kennedy : You've seen that trick before, Mr. Maverick.

Bret Maverick : No, just that kind of trickster.

  • Kennedy : Hard to understand... Losing ten thousand dollars to Bordeen is no more than losing ten dollars is to most people. He's that rich.

Bret Maverick : Some men can't stand to lose ten cents, Mr. Kennedy, no matter how rich they are.

  • John Bordeen : Your manners are bad, Maverick.

Bret Maverick : How can you tell? You had your back to me.

  • Bret Maverick : You owe me ten thousand dollars. I want it.

John Bordeen : Anybody who can palm an ace of spades like you did, Maverick, is a card sharp. And I don't pay off to card sharps. Now get out.

Bret Maverick : A long time ago, Mr. Bordeen, I decided that a gambling debt wasn't ever important enough to kill a man over. I decided that welchers are people to feel sorry for, that the pressure that made them crawl so low must have been worse than anything I could do to them. So I let it go at that, marked it off to profit and loss... But you don't get off that easy. No, sir. Every time your name comes up, Mr. Bordeen, every place I go, I'm gonna tell this little story about how the millionaire railroad-builder didn't actually lose ten thousand dollars to the stranger after all. Why not...? Because he didn't pay the stranger what he owed him.

John Bordeen : You wouldn't dare.

Bret Maverick : Like to bet another ten thousand on that?

  • [Maverick killed Bordeen the previous night]

John Bordeen : Hello, Mr. Maverick.

    Bret Maverick : I don't believe we've met.

Jerome Horne : This is the man you played poker with you last night.

Bret Maverick : The man who owes me ten thousand dollars?

John Bordeen : I'm, um, sorry I was so rude last night, Mr. Maverick.

[Bordeen gives Maverick a wad of bills]

Bret Maverick : Well, I'm sorry I killed you.

  • Ellen Bordeen : Will you help me?

    Bret Maverick : No, ma'am.

Ellen Bordeen : Not very noble, are you?

    Bret Maverick : No, ma'am.

Ellen Bordeen : Because you have your ten thousand dollars?

    Bret Maverick : Yes, ma'am.

  • [Ellen shots off half of the buggy's armrest with Maverick's gun]

Ellen Bordeen : I mean business, Mr. Maverick.

Bret Maverick : Can you hit what's left?

[Ellen shoots off the other half]

Bret Maverick : Let's talk business.

  • Bret Maverick : All right, you didn't hide the money in your room. And the clerk didn't put it in the safe. That leaves you, personally.

Ellen Bordeen : You come near me and I'm gonna scream.

Bret Maverick : If I don't get my money, I'll scream louder.

  • [Ellen learns that Ralph Bordeen has been posing as his dead brother]

Ellen Bordeen : Well, why not? Why shouldn't he have a little luxury, and a little comfort ,and a few riches.

Bret Maverick : Well, there's always the gout.

  • [Horne enters with his henchman who points his pistol at Maverick]

Jerome Horne : I'd hoped we weren't gonna meet again.

Bret Maverick : Imagine how I feel.

  • Bret Maverick : Goodbye, Ellen. Happy money.

  • Bret Maverick : [narrating]  My pappy had it right. Stick your nose in other people's business, and you'll get it bent.

  • Bret Maverick : Hey, now, you're not gonna faint again, are you?

Ellen Bordeen : Heh. No. No, not if you keep talking to me, I won't.

    Bret Maverick : About what?

Ellen Bordeen : Oh, I don't know. Tell me about a picnic you're gonna to take me on.

Bret Maverick : Okay, a picnic it is. As soon as we take care of Mr. Horne. And the first thing we're gonna have is...?

    Ellen Bordeen : Champagne.

Bret Maverick : ...Sunshine. And there'll be no gun-play whatsoever. It'll be just the two of us and the ants.

  • [first lines]

Bret Maverick : [narrating]  There's only one thing really wrong with Virginia City: The biggest poker game in town is a private affair.

  • [last lines]

[while resting after a picnic, Bret hiccups]

    Ellen Bordeen : Bless you.

    Bret Maverick : Thanks.

  • Bret Maverick : Mixing in other people's business isn't my profession, Mr. Jennings.

  • Ellen Bordeen : Well, you're not the most grateful of men. I just saved your life.

Bret Maverick : You also got rid of a bad conscience. Goodbye, Ellen. Happy money.

  • Bret Maverick : Half my problem was solved now, I had my $10,000. Solving the other half suddenly didn't seem too important. Suppose I did prove I killed Bordeen, I'd still have to prove that I'd done it in self defense, Uh-uh, no percentage. A trip to San Francisco suddenly seemed like a better idea.
