Bart runs into nearly every major star on the Warner Brothers lot. He meets Will Hutchins from Sugarfoot (1957), Clint Walker from Cheyenne (1955), John Russell and Peter Brown from Lawman (1958), Ty Hardin from Bronco (1958) and Edd Byrnes from 77 Sunset Strip (1958) (under a sign at the livery stable reading 77 Cherokee Strip). There is also a scene where Bart walks into an office. He finds a satchel on the desk, and a gunbelt hanging on the wall. This was a reference to Colt .45 (1957), which had just recently been canceled. Bits of their own TV themes play as they're shown on screen.
Robert Colbert makes his first appearance on the series as Cherokee Dan Evans. He would later in this season be cast as the third Maverick brother, Brent.
The "mule's foot" that Pender gives Bart is a reference to the TV series 'The Rebel'. Main character Johnny Yuma never appears, but Pender says that he kept the gun to pay off a bar debt. Both Bart and Pender dismiss the effectiveness of the trademark shotgun that Johnny used. "Mules foot" is a joking reference to a "mare's leg", which is any rifle or shotgun that has been shortened in order to carry it in a holster. Steve McQueen carried a "mare's leg" Winchester rifle in the TV series 'Wanted Dead or Alive'.
The shots of Clint Walker on his horse are clearly taken from an earlier episode of his own series; he is the only one of the gag cameos who does not interact with Maverick.
As Kookie on "77 Sunset Strip", Edd Byrnes was famous for combing his hair. There was even a hit single about it. Well here when we first see him, he's combing his horse's mane.
