One sweet racket
bkoganbing10 October 2018
Cousins Bart and Beau Maverick have a string of good luck in the town of Stop Gap at the poker tables. But they fall victim to one really sweet con job involving the telegrapher in the town. They are relieved of their money and get to spend some time in the town jail for fraud.

At least Roger Moore does, Jack Kelly is let out so he can raise the money to make good their "debt" or to find out what's going on.

I have to say that the town's isolation plays a big part in the story. Remember in those days the telegraph was the main source of information for one from the outside world.

The cousins do work well together, this is a splendid story.

Last Wire From Stop Gap

Warning: Spoilers
Bart and Beau team up to win $6000 only to be swindled by a phony telegraph company. Messages go no further than a nearby cave. Another Maverick is mentioned, Uncle Buck in Albuquerque, although he obviously does not exist. Olive Sturgess is Phyllis. There was a sameness about Maverick women. They dressed alike, had the same hairdo and were of an age group. That sharp clicking sound heard in the old westerns when one man hit another with his fist seems weird today. The first two seasons of Maverick were the best. When Roy Huggins, the show's creator, left because of pneumonia, both its writing and its ratings declined. Pappyism: "Hard work never hurt anyone - who didn't do it."
