According to Dandy Jim Buckley, the treasure is $40,000. It consists of two fifty pound bags of gold dust. Gold went for $18.93 to $18.96 per ounce from 1850 until 1918. Gold prices were very stable in the 19th century. So a fifty pound bag (800 oz. X 18.93) would be worth $15,144. So the two bags would only be worth $30, 288. Not $40,000.
