The Sioux Indians pop up a lot in these stories. The Sioux were in the Dakotas and the discovery of gold in the Black Hills led to conflict between the white man and the red man. Bret is in trouble for messing with a Colonel's wife when the Sioux attack the fort. Only Bret and two others survive. Bret manages to spook the superstitious Indians by pretending to be a ghost. When he vanquishes Running Horse, the Indians turn tail. Indians were regarded as savages when the Maverick series appeared in the 1950s. Native American are now venerated. Funny how things change! Young people in the 21st century may have a hard time relating to Maverick.

Stupid Indians never heard of rigor mortis

If I was an American Indian I would be truly offended by this Maverick story. It has Bret Maverick and two other soldiers defending a fort where the garrison
has been massacred. It must have really been fragrant around there with all
the dead lying in place.
The premise is that the soldiers and later a few more do come will survive only if they play on their superstitions. When one of them is seemingly shot by a dead soldier the Indians in panic retreat.
It really was Garner playing dead as part of the gag. But you can't tell me the Indians living life as they did never encountered rigor mortis as part of the death process.
The final confrontation with Garner and the chief is taken right from the MGM classic Ivanhoe with Robert Taylor and George Sanders. I'm surprised MGM didn't sue the brothers Warner.
