- Waco Williams: Maverick, I guess you're the only man in the world who would be insulted if somebody called him a good man.
- Bret Maverick: Not insulted, embarrassed.
- Colonel Karl Bent: Jack Regan here is gonna count to 10. If you ain't on your horse and heading out of town by the time he finishes counting, we're gonna shoot you down. Well?
- Waco Williams: Are you sure he can count all the way to 10, Colonel?
- [last lines]
- Bret Maverick: [to audience] Now, he did everything a man shouldn't do, but he's still alive. Looks like he'll be elected sheriff. I know he'll end up with the biggest ranch in the territory. And I'm broke. Nobody even knows I'm leaving or cares. Could I be wrong?
- [first lines]
- Sheriff Boyd Tait: Bernie?
- [Sheriff sends his Deputy over to check out two strangers, Bret and Waco, going into a 'Cattlemen Only' hotel]
- Bret Maverick: [to hotel clerk] Thank you.
- Deputy Bernie: [to Bret and Waco] You, uh... You boys come far?
- Bret Maverick: We had quite a ride. Came through the Brasada.
- Deputy Bernie: Oh, see any Indians?
- Waco Williams: We got ambushed by half a dozen of 'em. My sidekick got killed.
- Bret Maverick: So did the six Indians, courtesy of Mr. Williams.
- Bret Maverick: [to Waco] Do you know why I didn't mind taking off my coat? Because Karl Bent has got lots of money and I got none. And he's a bad poker player and I'm a good one. Now, are you going over there and kill my golden goose?
- Bret Maverick: Have you ever been in a Gulf hurricane?
- Waco Williams: No.
- Bret Maverick: Well, it's the big pine trees and the thick oaks that get uprooted first. The palm trees are smart. They give with the wind.
- Waco Williams: That sounds like pretty good advice... for trees.
- Bret Maverick: They live a long time.
- Sheriff Boyd Tait: [Speaking to Waco Williams] If I tried to bring Karl Bent to trial just because you accused him, this town would blow up all over the territory. You're accusing a cow man of killing a plow pusher, on an identification you made in the dark. Besides, a jury of cattle men would never convict him. A jury of rustlers, they'd hang him for spitting on the sidewalk.
