Quotes

  • [first lines]

Hotel messenger : [to Logan]  He's on his way down now.

[Logan leaves the lobby and signals someone just as Bret comes down the stairs]

Samantha Crawford : Bret? Bret Maverick.

Bret Maverick : Well, Samantha Crawford.

Samantha Crawford : [laughs]  Oh, how nice to see you again. I was thinking of you the other day.

Bret Maverick : How much did it cost me?

  • Samantha Crawford : How long will you be staying in Kansas City?

Bret Maverick : Well, I was going to stay a week, but I think I'll take the afternoon train.

Samantha Crawford : Oh, are you afraid of me, Bret?

Bret Maverick : No... No, not exactly. It's just that when I'm with you, I feel like I'm living through the last days of Pompeii.

  • Samantha Crawford : Oh, how is brother Bart?

Bret Maverick : I think he'll get well... if I don't mention your name.

  • Samantha Crawford : It's wonderful running into you again like this. It'll be like old times.

Bret Maverick : I'll try not to hold the thought.

  • Bret Maverick : When you're playing in a game with men who are as good as you are, poker's no long a game of skill. You're gambling.

  • Bret Maverick : Come on, Sam. Where's he from? What does he look like?

Samantha Crawford : I don't know where he's from. But I'll know him again when I see him.

Bret Maverick : I wanna know him when *I* see him.

  • Bret Maverick : I'm looking for someone, Conductor, uh, might be on this train.

Conductor : Oh, is that so?

Bret Maverick : Yeah. A very pretty girl, she's traveling alone. Blonde, about 23, 24. Blue eyes. And, well...

[makes feminine shape with his hands]

Conductor : [winding his watch]  I've been making this run for seven years, I never seen anyone like that.

Bret Maverick : No, I guess you haven't seen her. You've still got your watch.

  • Samantha Crawford : Sometimes I forget how clever you are. All right, Bret, I'll tell you the truth.

Bret Maverick : Please make it sound like a lie so I'll believe it.

  • Bret Maverick : Oh, stay with me, Samantha. I get lonely on trains.

Samantha Crawford : Oh, Bret, I couldn't very well get off, could I? The train's moving.

Bret Maverick : So it is, but you're Samantha Crawford and the engineer is only a man.

  • Samantha Crawford : Remember what Mother told you, brother Bret.

Bret Maverick : Somehow, I always remember what Pappy told me.

  • Bret Maverick : As my pappy always said, marriage is the only game of chance that he knows of where both people can lose.

  • [discussing the Sioux Indians dancing outside a captive's teepee]

Bret Maverick : Now, look. It's gonna be dawn in about three hours. They're out there whipping themselves into a lather and when that sun comes up, they're going to whip you into something else.

  • Bret Maverick : Sam, finding the British crown jewels in your bag wouldn't surprise me.

  • Bret Maverick : Even when I think I believe you, I know I'm wrong.

  • [last lines]

Bret Maverick : I believe it was your deal, Mr. Lockridge.

Gilling : I trust you'll accept our apologies, Mr. Maverick, and congratulations.

Bret Maverick : Well, thank you, Mr. Gilling. I hope there'll be no interruptions this time. I don't think there will be, what with Mr. Pritchard in jail and Mr. Logan very, very safe.

Gilling : Well, looks like I can open this pot. Fifty dollars, gentlemen.

  • Bret Maverick : I like you very much, Sam. It's fun trying to stay one step ahead of you. But this is a blue chip deal, beautiful, with my head for an ante. Tabor and the others weren't joking when they told me what to expect. And Gillings was right. The story'll get around, I'll have to go to Hong Kong to find a game.

  • Samantha Crawford : Well, don't you believe in coincidence?

Bret Maverick : Only for two other people.
