Quotes

  • Jesse Hayden : You're hanging yourself, Bret.

Bret Maverick : Beats letting strangers do it.

  • Bret Maverick : Well... just before the war ended, Bart and I, like a lot of Johnny Rebs, joined the Union army as Indian fighters to keep from rotting in a Yankee prison. Two years of that was plenty and when our hitch was over, well, Little Bend, Texas, our hometown, suddenly seemed like the best place on Earth to head for. We hadn't been back in over five years and things had changed. The Union army was running the place now, instead of the men who should have been running it. The Johnny Rebs had come home to nothing, but we were home, and we had plans.

  • Bart Maverick : We can't ever go back to Texas.

Dandy Jim Buckley : Why not?

Bret Maverick : We're wanted there.

Dandy Jim Buckley : For what?

Bret Maverick : Murdering two men.

  • Bret Maverick : High card keeps the date. Draw.

Bart Maverick : Queen for a queen.

Bret Maverick : A King for a queen.

  • Laura Miller : Well, gentlemen, what can I get you?

    Bret Maverick : Another girl.

Bart Maverick : Uh, for him.

  • Laura Miller : The army is starved for beef. They've posted the price and the money is there waiting.

Bret Maverick : And so is the land in between. That's five hundred miles of too many Comanches and not enough water.

  • Laura Miller : Well, now we can really get the cattle drive started.

Bret Maverick : Yes ma'am. Anybody know which way west is?

  • [first lines]

Bret Maverick : [narrating]  In August, when the scorching Colorado sun has baked the land bone-dry, the Ute Indians resort to a snake dance as a plea for rain. To the white man, this is merely a superstitious ceremony, colorful but useless.

[lightning flashes and a heavy rain storm starts]

Bret Maverick : [narrating]  A fat lot he knows.

  • [last lines]

Dandy Jim Buckley : What, um...? What happens if you find this tall man, you... go back to Texas and settle down?

Bret Maverick : Well, that worries us quite a bit, too.

Bart Maverick : Course, it would be nice if we were *able* to go home, so we do look for him.

Dandy Jim Buckley : Well, if I happen to run into him, I'll, um... I'll try not to notice.

  • Bret Maverick : That's quite an apology.

Laura Miller : Who said I was sorry?

  • Dandy Jim Buckley : Go ahead, what good's money? We're all going to drown anyway.

Bret Maverick : He's mad because he got his fancy boots all wet.
