The Crush
JordanThomasHall17 October 2019
The high school journalism class has been assigned to interview the office holders in Mayberry. Sam sits down with Nancy Hughes (Darleen Carr) who has an instant attraction to him. She approaches Sam later about a more in-depth interview, and Millie overhears to caution him that she has a crush on him. He tries to avoid her, but she is relentless. Howard suggests using psychology by finding a younger version of Sam. Sam asks Emmett's nephew Pete (Darryl Young) to join him, Millie, Nancy, Howard, and Emmett at a barbecue at Myers Lake. With the matchmaking appearing ineffective, Howard plots something more direct, with a comical result.

Showcase for Darlene Carr

Surprisingly fun episode. We actually get some Sam Jones (Ken Berry) slight attempts of humor. Which is very unusual for the character. Mike Jones (Buddy Foster) is missing in action. Darlene Carr gives an excellent performance as Nancy who has a crush on Sam which turns out to be somewhat comical. Daryl Young as Pete did a good job. Sort of a strange casting as he appears quite older than high school age. Also, we get to see an agitated and jealous side of gorgeous Millie Swanson (Arlene Golonka).

Thought the episode would be a stinker. Actually turned out to be pretty funny. Comical contributions by George Lindsey, Paul Hartman, and Jack Dodson.
