- Crockett and Tubbs travel to New York to take down a powerful Colombian cartel.
- The two hour, much-anticipated second season premier of Miami Vice, Prodigal Son starts off with Rico and Tubbs driving deep in the Columbian jungle with a DEA agent to find out the timing of the Revilla brothers arrival in Miami. They run into Columbian para-military torturing a suspect, with the DEA agent translating and trying to keep the peace. The suspect whispers a code for a location for the drop shipment in Miami. As Tubbs and Crockett leave, they hear gunshots and the suspect was executed.
After they return to Miami, the Vice squad coordinates with DEA to stake out the location in the Everglades, where they find Revillas' crew unloading cocaine from a ditched plane. The bust goes bad, with nearly all of the Revilla team killed except for one of the brothers, who escapes in the swamp. Later, Rico, Sonny & Trudie are headed to a DEA party to celebrate the bust when they hear gunshots - one shooter escapes, but everyone inside is dead. Sonny finds Gina seriously wounded in the corner.
At the hospital, the lead DEA agent speaks of other agents being executed who were involved in the Everglades bust. They believe there is a serious leak at DEA, and they need Vice to provide some key players to chase the Revillas up in New York and flush them out. They now can link the Revillas to the murders of the agents, which is a capital crime, but they cannot find them.
Sonny and Rico head to New York after an intro from Newton Blades, a dealer/supplier in Miami. They meet up with a potential distributor, with the cover story that they stole the 600 kilos of cocaine from the cops after the Everglades bust. The distributor makes a bunch of calls to set up meets, only to find that he tips of the Revillas who are not pleased as they distribute their own network. A number of threats are made, and Sonny and Rico are turned down by every dealer they meet.
One distributor they meet with has his girlfriend with him - Valerie, Tubbs' long lost girlfriend, who apparently has been undercover and mixing business with pleasure for some time. Tubbs is determined to get her back, to no avail. Crockett meets a flirty but controlling woman named simply Margaret, and spends the night at her place. When he wakes in the morning, he finds one of his guns gone and Margaret nowhere to be found.
Crockett and Tubbs decide to turn up the heat, and steal a portion of the Revillas' delivery and blow up their warehouse, resulting in the local cops deciding to shut down Sonny & Rico's operation. However, the boldness of their actions has interested the Revillas, who send a request to meet. NYPD makes it clear that they are done, no backup, no cocaine for the meet with the Revillas.
Sonny gets his gun back, and he and Margaret spend another evening together, where he seems close to saying he's a cop. He does admit that Burnett is not his last name. Margaret seems stressed about some "business" that she is vague about. The Revillas try to hit Crockett, Tubbs and their distributor twice and succeed in killing their distributor. Rico meets up with Valerie a few times, but when her dealer boyfriend sees them together and realizes she's in cahoots with Rico, he starts shooting and Rico kills her boyfriend in self-defense. Valerie pulls a gun on Rico, and then drops it and tells him to leave. Rico is enraged that someone leaked who they were to the Revillas, and Valerie mentions Margaret.
Sonny and Rico confront Margaret, who gives them the name of her boss, a financier on Park Avenue. The long and the short of it is, the pressure on NYPD to back off, the hits on Rico & Sonny, and all of the other roadblocks they've hit were in part because this financier has invested in the Columbians. Sonny and Rico go to the meet with the Revillas with no backup. In the middle, Valerie shows up and a melee erupts, with nearly all of the Revilla team getting killed. Sonny takes chase after the lone remaining Revilla brother, who takes off in a helicopter that Sonny shoots down, and it explodes. Valerie and Rico reconcile and spend the night together.
Rico and Sonny return to Miami with the Revilla network dead, Gina recovered, and seemingly everything back to normal.
