After Ed is found dead with stab wounds behind the rectory, his dad farmer Bonner uses his considerable clout to weigh on Sheriff Claudell Cox, who assures Jessica Matt is safest in jail, while after pulling a knife on Kelso the lynching-minded rabble assembles outside till Bonner breaks them up; the sheriff admits taking the bloody knife all the way to his home across town where it was found without dumping it in the river makes no sense. - Returning from a literary conference, Professor Ames Caulfield's car breaks down. Caulfield and his passenger, Jessica Fletcher, are forced to stay at a small inn where he runs into a former student, Cassie Burns, who also happens to be the owner. Cassie now has a son, Matthew, who plays in a band at the local tavern where his girlfriend, Linda Bonner, works as a waitress. Linda's brother Ed doesn't like Matthew and humiliates the boy in public. After Ed is found dead however Matthew is the obvious suspect. For Jessica, there are several loopholes in the local Sheriff's way of thinking about the case and sets out to find the real killer.—garykmcd
