The death of Colleen Dewhurst the previous summer left a void that the writers wisely wrote into the storyline, having Avery having a heart attack while having an affair with her gardener. Her ex -husband Bill (Darren McGavin) shows up, giving the two a chance to make amends and reveal a few secrets. The arrival of a trunk from Avery opens a Pandora's box of memories, especially for Bill finding a golf club he's been searching for the past 20 years. What starts off as funny due to Avery's insistence that there be no tears becomes quite profound as even Bill begins to miss her and Murphy finally breaks down with the presence of something from when she was a baby. Murphy and her father really get things out in the open, with Murphy finally getting to see her father's point of why as much as he still loved Avery as to why they could no longer live together. Outside of a needed flashback of the three of them together, this is a perfect tribute to the memory of both Avery Brown and Colleen Dewhurst, and as we know, this is not the end of Avery Brown.
