The adventures of Sebastian the Rooster and Prudence
mlbroberts20 September 2021
Prudence's pet rooster learns to crow but won't stop doing it in the middle of the night. The family tries various remedies. Nanny sits up with him one night. The Professor tries putting a cardboard box over him in his coop, but Sebastian gets away and Daddy ends up chasing him through the neighborhood in the middle of the night only to be confronted by the police. Sebastian is brought home but he still won't stop crowing during the night, so Hal tries one of his inventions but it ends up giving Sebastian a hefty electric shock. Nanny comes to believe that Sebastian is after a mate, and the Professor is left to try to explain that facts of life to Prudence to get her to let him send Sebastian to a farm to "have his pick of lady chickens." Of course, Sebastian doesn't stay there.

What this show did best was handle situations any family might handle, just with a touch of mysterious help from a surprise Nanny. This episode dealt with a pet growing up and having to be given away, and how a father explains the facts of life to his five-year-old daughter and convinces her it is her decision to make but she should make the right one. Kim Richards was awfully good in this show and especially this episode - for heaven's sake she was only five years old but she could believably pull off the broken-hearted child having to make a very tough decision about a pet she loved.

Riled-up Rooster

Prudence's (Kim Richards) rooster Sebastian has finally learned to crow- in the middle of the night. The neighbors are quite upset. Day and night, the rooster continually crows. The professor tries to quieten it one night by placing a box over it, but accidentally lets it out of the cage. He chases it through the yard until it perches on top of a dairy truck and takes off. Ironically, he is stopped by a police officer for disturbing the peace. The effect it is having on the neighborhood leads the professor to declare Sebastian must find a new home. Hal (David Doremus) comes up with the idea of conditioning him, but a mishap causes Sebastian to be badly injured and the family rushes him to the vet. When the writers finally decide to inject more overt comedy into the series it seems to come at an inopportune time trying to be seen by the vet (Jerry Hausner, "I Love Lucy"). It pulls through and appears to be discontent wanting a hen. Prudence's father attempts to explain it to her. Will the crowing finally stop? I feel the awkwardness of the comedy in trying to be seen by the vet and a poorly-executed lesson detract from this episode.
