The Heat Generation!
ShadeGrenade21 November 2006
Warning: Spoilers
With Stan and Arthur gone, and Blakey in residence, you'd think that life in the Butler household would be all peace and tranquility. Er, no. There's no hot water on tap, as Blakey discovers when he tries to shave. Jack offers him a good deal on an emersion heater, but it turns out to have been stolen from the bus depot. Blakey and Jack endeavour to get the heater installed, and wind up breaking the stopcock in the street, causing a flood of near-Biblical proportions...

The first post-Reg Varney episode actually isn't too bad; one gets the impression that Blakey's lines were originally intended for Stan. No sooner is Blakey around that kitchen table than he starts insulting Olive in much the same way Stan and Arthur used to. Blakey and Jack trying to fit the heater isn't nearly as funny as Stan and Jack would have been. Had Reg been in this, it would have been a great little episode.

Fuinniest moment - Blakey and Jack turning off the stopcock in the street. When a policeman comes their way, they try to make it look as though they are dancing!

Blakey lands himself in hot water!
Rabical-912 January 2017
The first episode of 'On The Buses' not to feature Reg Varney starts off with Blakey, now Mrs. Butler's live-in lodger complaining about the lack of hot water. Jack tells him that he knows where he can get him an Immersion heater dirt cheap. Blakey takes him up on his offer, not knowing that it has been stolen out of the depot.

Fitting of the heater duly gets underway but, as one would expect, something has to go wrong somewhere. Jack breaks the stopcock in the street, causing huge torrents of water to flood the streets...

I quite liked the first post Reg Varney episode, though admittedly it would have been funnier seeing Stan fitting the heater with Jack rather than Blakey. Blakey was a good supporting character but moving him to centre stage after Varney's departure gave the impression that the writers were trying to replace Stan.

Funniest bit - Jack and Blakey, after piercing the ceiling, being soaked from head to foot by a massive stream of water!

Second funniest bit - Mrs. Butler expressing concern about water leaking from the fusebox. Blakey insists that it is only condensation and to prove his point switches it on. Cue explosion!

There's life after Varney.

With Stan gone, Blakey has taken up his place at The Butler residence, it isn't long before he's squabbling over hot water, he tries to fix the immersion heater, but finds himself in need of Jack's help.

Based on the reviews I've read recently, I wasn't expecting much post Stan, but this was actually quite funny, arguably not a classic, but still funny, and has that familiar feeling. The scene with the Policeman was the funniest moment.

The entire dynamic of the show has changed, Stan was the central character, and with him gone, it's Blakey who's stepped forward, his name was up first in the opening credits. Blakey is now dishing out the caustic remarks, involved in Jack's dodgy schemes, and fighting for his place in the bathroom, he's been quick to throw away the rule book.

Is that the first time we get to see the interior of Jack's house? It was nice to see them change things up a bit.

Lewis and Grant worked very hard here, in front of the camera, and presumably behind the camera too.

Pretty good, 7/10.

Forced humour, lost its magic without Stan and Arthur. Should have ended at end of series 6.
