Financial crisis hits the Butler household so bad that Stan is forced to try and look for extra work. Unable to secure overtime, in desperation he applies for the position of assistant inspector, which is a higher paying job than being a driver. He does get the job ( somewhat improbably ) but it comes at a price. Jack drops him from the darts team and all his mates turn against him as he is 'one of them!'.
Stan tries his best to impress Blakey but he keeps on causing more trouble than he ever did as a driver..
It was going to happen. Five episodes into its run, Wolfe & Chesney tinkered with the comedic possibility of making Stan an inspector. Truth to tell, it was not half as funny as it could have been. One did not so much laugh at Stan as get increasingly annoyed with him as he started making reports for the most trivial things. In 1971, Bob Grant and Stephen Lewis revamped the storyline for the much funnier series five episode 'Vacancy For Inspector'.
Funniest bit - Stan, still an inspector, hailing a bus at a request stop. However, the bus drives past him right through a muddy puddle, soaking Stan from head to foot.
