Talbot Adds Spice To This Story
ccthemovieman-14 January 2012
Warning: Spoilers
The local carnival is in town and Pete just happened to be there when he stops a man on the run, being chased by Lt. Jacoby. Seconds earlier, we saw a magician attempting to make his beautiful assistant disappear in a mummy box (for lack of a better description). The trick failed because when the magician opened the coffin, the woman fell out, dead.

Pete is then hired by the midway's strongman to protect that woman's roommate, a girl he has a crush on. The woman. "Rowena" (played by the sexy Nita Talbot) is a flirt and has a lot more interest in Gunn than she does the stupid strongman. Gunn has to find the real killer, and it's obviously not the kid we see being apprehended in the beginning.

There are some interesting-looking circus types in here but it is Talbot makes this episode go from "fair" to "good" because her character is fascinating and her dialog is film noir-ish all the way, right up to her surprising exit scene.

Colorful episode... in black and white, of course
Fluke_Skywalker8 July 2023
I suppose the side streets and dark alleys that make up this show's no name city are really just carnivals themselves, so plopping Gunn down into an actual carnival doesn't really feel like much of a stretch.

As you might imagine, the atmosphere of the traveling circus and its odd-ball denizens adds a nice flavor to the whole thing, but the real star here is Nita Talbot. She absolutely melts the screen with her smoky voice and the naughty twinkle in her beautiful eyes. Her back and forth flirtation with Gunn is clever and sexy, and their scenes together are the highlight of the episode.

The plot itself isn't exactly earth-shattering stuff, but I was surprised by the ending, which stuck the landing pretty well.

Take a bow, Ms. Talbot. In fact. Take two.

Talbot in Exotic Episode
dougdoepke11 July 2017
I'll watch anything with the delicious Nita Talbot, one of Hollywood's more exotic performers. I love it when she gets coy with Pete. The flirtation just oozes out. I always remember her as the available barfly in that exceptional noir, On Dangerous Ground (1952). She has a way of projecting on two levels- one is her outer role, the other is kind of an inner smirk at what her outer part's doing. Anyway she's always interesting and different.

The episode's a good one, though I wish they had done more with the carnival's unusual people-the bearded lady, the fat man, the midgets, et al. Then too, I wanted more of singer Edie's jealous reaction when a reluctant Pete's sits down front at Mother's with a sexy Talbot. That's a really good setup that deserved follow-up. Nonetheless, the opening hook's a grabber in a series that specialized in opening hooks. Forget the routine whodunit, even though the storyline does have a surprising twist. All in all, it's a very watchable half-hour thanks to Talbot and co, and shouldn't be passed up.

Carnival Sadness full of Intrigue
biorngm4 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Review - Murder on the Midway This episode is superbly acted by all cast members, guests like Nita Talbot, Stanley Adams and Ron Foster were cast perfectly and acted in the same manner. The story-line was sad with the killings throughout, but the intrigue kept the attention of the viewer for the duration. The settings were mostly outside throughout the carnival, exception being Mother's with the circus performers and Edie's reaction to Pete's date. No help with the plot lines so as not to spoil the story entirely because the finish is unexpected and sad. I voted a top-rating for this one because it had a believable story with solid acting.

One of the Best
You get everything that makes noir such a great genre in this episode. Perfect for 'Peter Gunn' fans as well as a general audience unfamiliar with the series.
