It starts with Peter Gunn found guilty and sentenced to death for bank robbery and murder.

Maybe it is all an elaborate set up by Lieutenant Jacoby to infiltrate some shady goings on inside a prison.

However Gunn escapes and looks to prove his own innocence. Relying on the justice system was of no use.

He comes face to face with various witnesses. They all claimed they saw Peter Gunn, one of them has poor eyesight.

Maybe a sinister gang was behind it and set up Gunn. They just need a man with Peter Gunn's face, right on cue for an out of work actor and illusionist.

Once again there is some nice camerawork, a good appearance from Sylvester the reformed locksmith who gives Gunn some vital information. The story itself a bit too far fetched.

Peter Gunn on the Run

The narrative is spotty and not very convincing. That's likely the result of a packed premise that needs at least an hour to unravel. Pete's convicted of robbery and murder and sentenced to death. After which, he escapes Jacoby's friendly custody and goes after the real culprits. The result is a patchwork of rather disconnected events, leading to a slam-bang contrived climax. Nonetheless, apart from the flawed screenplay, the episode has a little of everything that made the series special: good low-key acting, imaginative camera-work (note the apt closeups), a colorful informer (Sylvester), and lots of noir atmosphere. Plus, just when guys like me get tired of looking at all the other guys, the gorgeous Edie (Albright) makes a needed appearance. And I shouldn't forget gender-bending Mother (Urecal) to add an exotic note. In short, style and visual imagination more than compensate for an inferior narrative.
