The hitman and her...

The people behind the making of a fighter plane which has dangerous defects - resulting in the deaths of dozens of pilots - are about to be exposed by an investigative journalist. They get wind of it, and hire a South African hitman to come to London and take him out before he can talk.

This is a pretty decent story from season 3, that sees the hitman Van Niekirk taken into CI5 custody on his arrival in the UK - only to be replaced by Doyle, as CI5 endeavour to discover exactly whom his intended target actually is.

Martin Shaw does a pretty good South African accent, and there's plenty of opportunities for humour and banter from the boys along the way. Look out for Linda Belligham too as the wife of the hitman's target Hope, and a nicely ad-libbed scene between she and Bodie when she thinks he's broken into her house.

It's not clear why the girl Doyle meets in the hotel seems to know what's going on - maybe it was just Doyle's misinterpretation of her friendly chatter that caused him to make an error of judgment.

A good climax too inside the HQ of the Daily Express newspaper plant in Fleet Street, and a fiery Bodie as he answers Cowley back and threatens to resign over a deadly blunder.

A well-paced and entertaining episode that a good balance of suspense and action.

Well balanced

Warning: Spoilers
Better than the previous episode, SLUSH FUND has a good blend of humour, chases, action and suspense in the story of a reporter who's got a very interesting story to tell and the South African hitman on his trail. Stuart Wilson - a suave but menacing presence - is the big guest star here, alongside TV favourite Lynda Bellingham in a much smaller role. The episode is well balanced over all, a typical example of the show at its most reliable.

Slush Fund

Actor Stuart Wilson continues his tour of British television shows of the 1970 and early 1980s.

He lands in The Professionals as South African contract killer Van Neikerk who has been hired to bump off a reporter investigating an East European manufactured fighter plane that crashes a lot.

Bodie and Doyle need to protect the reporter. They catch Van Neikerk who is held for interrogation.

Doyle meanwhile pretends to be him to find out who might have hired him.

Trouble is Van Neikerk escapes and goes after Doyle.

A somewhat confusing episode with some off the wall humour such as the snoring old man in a club while Cowley is having a chat with someone.

There are bits of it that makes no sense and a badly done car stunt scene.
