Quotes

  • Gurd Canliss : I thought you'd left me.

Augusta Canliss : What would I do with all that plantation?

  • Augusta Canliss : Eight white pillars guard the front. Greyhounds, Poppa brought from Italy, scamp on the lawn, all the way to the river, that lawn goes. You can smell that sweet swamp land and all the rich honey earth all around. And inside the house, there's a double staircase so that mother and daughter can make stunning entrances together trying to outdazzle that chandelier that Poppa brought from Vienna. And, oh, from the kitchen, odours and spices so pungent that are going to drive us wild. Mama's tipsy cake, and, oh my, something to look forward to.

Gurd Canliss : Don't leave me, Augusta, don't ever leave me.

Augusta Canliss : Oh, I don't have the sense.

  • Augusta Canliss : You make a perfect target, black against those white walls.

Gurd Canliss : I wish you hadn't learnt that knid of knowledge.

Augusta Canliss : You wear a white shirt tomorrow.

Gurd Canliss : Tell me what you see down there, Augusta.

Augusta Canliss : People, happy people.

Gurd Canliss : What do I see?

Augusta Canliss : White washed walls where the sun stains at noon, at one, at two. Does the steeple block it? Where the relections from which window, which water trough, how do the shadows fall, where you might catch a foootsip. On three sides of the plaza, white walls, so you wear black. You create an easy target, an outline, a thing in black fixed in the mind of Don Miguel on his front side. But suddenly, when the moment comes, you change position, and now you're there, in the doorway of that church, dark open doorway and the blackness of the chapel coming up behind you. Black on black.
