- Quince wakes up in the livery stable drunk after a night on the town with some of the drovers. After he leaves, the body of the leading citizen is found behind the stable door shot. Quince is arrested the next day but remembers nothing.
- Drover Quince is arrested on the charge of shooting in the back the town's most prominent citizen (the Major), but Quince was drunk at the time and remembers nothing. With a trial set for the next day, Favor and Rowdy investigate. The Major was killed in the alleyway near the saloon and near the stable where Quince passed out drunk. Della, the saloon owner, who has her office right by that ally, is the only person in town who says Quince might be innocent and shouldn't be lynched, so Favor suspects she knows the truth and can give testimony freeing Quince. In a stunning conclusion, Della saves Quince by telling the assembled would-be lynchers that the Major had feet of clay and exploited the town, denouncing the townies, and revealing the name of the killer.—chipe
- Some of the drovers go to Cottonwood for a night on the town. After a fight with a man, Rowdy takes the drunken Quince outside to cool down. The drovers leave town but Quince has fallen asleep in the stable. Still drunk Quince wakes up returning to camp. As he leaves Cottonwood the man Quince fought with is found shot in the back behind the open stable door. The next day a posse arrives in camp to arrest Quince who remembers none of the details. Favor and Rowdy follow to see if they can clear Quince but learn no one is talking about the murder of the leading citizen of Cottonwood. Rowdy in questioning the saloon owner, Della Locke, discovers that she doubts Quince is guilty. The evidence against Quince is flimsy at best. Ignoring Favor's orders, Clay brings most of the drovers to town to help. Favor stops a lynching by having his men disarm. He investigates the scene of the crime and decides to question Della further. When the citizens see her with Favor, the lynch mob returns and the Sheriff quits.—Anonymous
