Richard Anderson gives an excellent performance in this episode.

Richard Anderson does a nice job of playing Tom Birch, a friend of Lucas, that rides into North Fork with more on his mind that just a visit of old friends. It seems that Tom has a few men and they having been riding across the territory robbing banks.

Lucas is familiar with Tom's past but still welcome him as an old friend that he has not seen in years. Tom tells Lucas that he is just stopping by on his way to Denver. Mark is a bit more suspicious of Tom and when he tells his Pa that he saw Tom riding toward North Fork instead of Denver, Lucas still wants to believe the best.

In town, Micah has already been alerted that a gang of robbers may be on their way to North Fork so he has extra guards on duty. When Lucas rides in and sees Tom, Lucas knows that something is about to go down and it is going to involve one of his best friends.

Richard Anderson does a nice job in this episode as the cool and collective friend. Even when the viewer knows that his character is on the wrong side of the law, Anderson's performance still makes him seem like an enjoyable chap. Another nice western show that makes for a entertaining watch.

THE RIFLEMAN – One went to Denver - 1959

This is the 25th episode from the 1958 to 1963 western series, THE RIFLEMAN. Over the course of 168 episodes we follow the life of Lucas McCain and his son, Mark. They have moved to the small western town of North Fork where they hope to start a new life. Chuck Connors headlines the series with Johnny Crawford as his son. Connors is a world class hand with a Winchester rifle which of course ends up getting him in no end of trouble.

A gang of outlaws led by, Richard Anderson, are planning to hit the North Fork bank when a large cash shipment arrives. The gang, Jack Kruschen, Ben Morris and John Goddard ride into North Fork to take up positions for the raid. Anderson rides off to visit an old friend, Chuck Connors. Connors and Anderson had been friends back when they were teenagers.

There is a fair amount of backslapping and tall tales traded around the table as the two talk of old times. Connors knows that Anderson has taken up the gun and is a wanted man. But, as long as he is just riding through he says nothing. Anderson tells Connors that he is turning over a new leaf and heading for Denver.

The next morning Anderson saddles up early and heads for North Fork. He intends to meet with his men and nail the bank's cash vault at opening. Things however do not go off as planned. The bank has hired an extra guard, Lewis Charles, who is hidden inside the bank. When Anderson's crew hit the tellers and demand the cash, Lewis blows away the first man. Then Sheriff Paul Fix knocks the second man down with a blast from his shotgun. The third bites the dirt trying to join in.

While all this is going on, Connors, who had ridden in to North Fork just after Anderson, is keeping Anderson covered in the saloon. He knew that Anderson was not heading for Denver. He had rode in to make sure and had found Anderson about to join in the robbery. After the other gang members have been eliminated, Connors hands Anderson over to Sheriff Fix. Friend or not, Anderson was planning harm to Connor's town.

A pretty sharp looking episode with some nicely handled violence. The reason for this is the great talent behind the camera. Direction is handled by big screen film-noir veteran, Lewis Allen. Allen helmed a whole series of well-done noir that included, DESERT FURY, SO EVIL MY LOVE, CHICAGO DEADLINE, APPOINTMENT WITH DANGER, ILLEGAL, A BULLET FOR JOEY and SUDDENLY.

Handling the cinematography reins is another noir veteran, George Diskant. His work includes, DESPERATE, RIFFRAFF, PORT OF NEW YORK, THEY LIVE BY NIGHT, BEWARE MY LOVELY, BETWEEN MIDNIGHT AND DAWN, THE NARROW MARGIN,KANSAS CITY CONFIDENTIAL and ON DANGEROUS GROUND.
