Everyone in North Fork is saddened when young Joey Merrick, who's not much older that Mark McCain, is found dead on the trail. For Walt Avery and his wife, the killing has all of the hallmarks of their son, Brud Evans. The Averys are ashamed of how their boy turned out, have changed their name and moved to a new community more than once. This time however, they've decided that they will hold their ground. When Brud shows up and Mark McCain finds Joey's horse and saddle in the Avery's barn, Lucas has to step in.
