Tina (Kristen Meadows) - a chesty former beach bunny who is married to Ricky Brazil (Robert Desiderio, stealing every scene he is in) - a local mobster, runs off after discovering he is planning to murder a cop who has been hounding him. She heads for King Harbor marina Pier 56 where two of her himbo ex-boyfriends Cody Allen (Perry King) and Nick Ryder (Joe Penny) live on a luxury boat called 'The Riptide'.
There she meets Murray Bozinski (Thom Bray) - a video game designer and inventor who has partnered with Cody and Nick in the Pier 56 Detective Agency. She says she needs protection and he takes her on as a client. Meanwhile Cody and Nick are abducted by Brazil's henchman and brought before the gangster who hires them to find Tina - a woman he figures will go to them for help given their past with her and who unbeknownst to them is already on Cody's boat.
When Cody and Nick get back to the boat Murray fills them in and takes to Tina. After talking it over they extrapolate that the cop Brazil wants to put a contract on is none other than Lieutenant Quinlan (Jack Ging) a gruff, curmudgeonly and downright sleazy misanthrope who has it in for the unlikely private investigators. The guys try to do the right thing as usual and only get into more trouble.
Only a couple of episodes in to the series the show was already overdoing the gag of Murray's robot the 'Roboz' struggling to do household chores whilst accomplishing complex tasks which allowed the guys to get the drop on the baddies. Roboz would spill drinks, knock over furniture and fall in to the ocean but also provide high tech tracking and surveillance. The running joke was that Cody and Nick would be afraid to use the Roboz on complicated tasks it excelled at because it fumbled simple household chores.
I don't doubt that some in the audience were watching to see cocky, good-looking, vain dilettantes Cody and Nick get beaten up every week. The show did appeal to that darker side whilst giving viewers a look at the good life aboard a boat in a California marina. Each episode was a glimpse of this exciting fantasy life the guys were living that was considerably less than working hard at a job site or in an office 9 to 5. They would always have to pay a price for it usually in the form of a beating if not multiple beatings as well as threats of death and incarceration.
