The story is inspired by the long-lasting urban myth that the Grand Duchess Anastasia, one of the children of the last Russian Tsar, had miraculously escaped being murdered with the rest of her family and several others in an Ekatrinburg cellar in 1918. In the 1950s, a popular play and film (Anastasia (1956)) dealt with this subject, and a woman calling herself Anna Anderson spent years claiming that she really was Anastasia, although DNA testing after her death proved this claim false.
