- Tod driving toward Memphis, Tennessee sees old love interest Vicki Russell speeding by and pursues her. He does not know she is going there to meet someone "as impulsive and undisciplined as herself"-and get married. Buz is not seen-he is in Cleveland at Mercy Hospital with "echo-virus" (ringing in the ears).—dubchi
- With Buz still in Mercy Hospital in Cleveland recuperating from echo virus, Tod is alone as he enters Memphis. He is totally distracted as he spots entering Memphis at the same time Vicki Russell, the metaphysics espousing, free-wheeling, motorcycle riding orphaned heiress he and Buz met and were totally enchanted with in Tuscon. What Tod is initially unaware of is that she is in town on an agreement possibly to enter into a marriage with Franck Bridenbaugh, which would be more a business merger between the First Mercantile Bank of Boston and the Bridenbaugh's vast cotton fortune. It is not a guarantee as the two have not yet met, Vicki only agreeing at least to meet with her potential new husband, with who she must still feel a connection. Beyond her possible upcoming nuptials, Tod has two other major obstacles in actually catching up to Vicki. The first is Pogo Popkin, Vicki's unofficial escort who is representing the interests of the First Mercantile Bank of Boston in making sure that Vicki and Franck's meeting actually happens and goes as smoothly as possible. The second is a pesky and persistent Memphis motorcycle cop, who is out to prove that Tod is crazy and/or drunk as Tod chases after Vicki in his Corvette.—Huggo
