- Tod and Buz have just started working as cabbies for the Ace Cab Co. in Chicago, Illinois, they sharing a cab with Tod working the day shift and Buz the night shift. Early in his first shift, Tod saves an older man from being run over by a runaway cart at Grand Central Station, that cart which would have either severely injured or killed the man if he was hit. That man is Harry Wender, just released from prison after serving thirty-two years for crimes committed in Chicago during the Prohibition era. Known then as the "Pay-off Man", Harry finds that Chicago has changed much, with the hotel where his trunk filled with all his mementos now torn down and the trunk's whereabouts unknown. But what he believes hasn't changed is that someone is trying to kill him, that runaway cart no accident. Despite the changes to Chicago and the supposed death threat which Harry feels is supported by subsequent telephone calls he receives, he will not leave Chicago, his town, which is the advice of the police. Harry becomes Tod's third fare ever. While Tod sees in Harry a piece of living Chicago history who deserves compassion as another human being, Buz can still only see the criminal that caused so many people grief during his criminal days. As Tod and Buz end up helping Harry track down those people from his past to see if they are the threat to his life, Harry may not want to face the possibility that the person who is trying to kill him may be the one person he hopes it is not. Through it all, Harry may find that he is the one who has changed most of all, but not in a way he thought.—Huggo
