- Driving near Palm Springs, Tod and Buz decide to stop at a roadside date stand in Indio, California for lunch. Learning that there is work to be had on the date ranch, they decide to stay for work after speaking to the invalid owner, Adam Darcy, whose physical disability is from a recent accident. That work not only includes harvesting, but also doing domestic work in the house. They are not fully aware of all the issues Adam is facing, Tod and Buz who may be caught in the middle as his only current hired help, all others who have left because of his problems. First, Adam has a seductive ward named Sweet Thing, whose now deceased parents were Adam's friends. He promised to them to take care of Sweet Thing by eventually marrying her. She, however, sees "better" things for herself than marrying an older man, but needs the money Adam has hidden somewhere on the ranch to escape from him. Second, the Division of Highways is building a new highway through his property. The contractors left some large and expensive equipment on his property, which he has since taken hostage, he perched on a chair on his front porch with a rifle - which he is not afraid to use - until they leave without what they came with unless they agree to move the highway to being around his property. And third, the highway works crew is comprised of convicts near release or parole, and thus are on the honor system without security. Long without female companionship, they may be easy prey for Sweet Thing, who needs help in her task.—Huggo
