Davis Roberts debuts as Dr. Caldwell
kevinolzak17 December 2016
"Whiplash" opens with Fred taking the truck to get some coffee, Lamont worried because he's a lousy driver. Officers Swanny (Noam Pitlik, fifth of six) and Smitty bring him home, a little shaken but otherwise fine, having been rammed from the rear by a white man driving a black Cadillac. Bubba convinces him that he's sitting on a gold mine, though Lamont knows it can't work: "A- they don't have any other witnesses who saw the other car, B- they might not ever find the other car, and C- I think you made the whole thing up" "D- you're a dummy, E- everybody knows about whiplash, F- they gonna find the man, and G- I wish you'd get the H outta here!" Bubba sends over Dr. Caldwell (Davis Roberts) for an examination of whiplash, coughing and wheezing with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth, Lamont incredulous: "and you're a doctor?" "in some states!" "are you a bone specialist?" "no, I'm a whiplash specialist!" After learning that a white driver was responsible, he concludes that Fred should start taking French lessons: "it'll be easier when you go to live on the French Riviera!" He's still choking on his way out: "you better get a doctor to see about that cough, doc!" Lt. Driscoll (Kelly Thordsen), later seen in "Rated X," delivers the correct suspect, but things are not as they seem. Davis Roberts made such a strong impression in only three episodes that one wishes that Dr. Caldwell appeared more often ("A Guest in the Yard" and "Lamont, Is That You?" were the others).
