"Its time to establish in-law relations!"

Warning: Spoilers
Visiting a health shop, Shelley is appalled at the high prices of some of the items. Picking up a potato, he remarks: "What's this been grown in? Yeti droppings?".

The moment he and Fran have long dreaded has arrived. Travelling by train, they arrive at the country home/farm of Gordon Smith, Fran's rich Dad. He is a charmless snob who regards Shelley as a layabout even though he now has a job.

Smith confides in his future son-in-law that he is stone broke, mortgaged up to the hilt. His farm produce is not selling too well. Remembering the health shop, Jim has an excellent idea...

Chosen to open the second batch of 'Shelley' episodes in 1980 ( the first having been interrupted by a ten-week I.T.V. strike ), this is a good episode, boasting a fine performance from the late Frederick Jaegar as 'Smith', the father-in-law from Hell. Though its a little unbelievable that he does not lose his temper when Shelley unleashes his usual insults. Also in the house is Rowena Cooper as 'Mrs.Goddard', Smith's housekeeper, who has an annoying habit of never finishing sentences, rather like Ronnie Corbett in a legendary 'Two Ronnies' skit.

Funniest moment - Mr.Smith tells Shelley that when he dies, Fran inherits everything. "You couldn't give us an idea when that will be?", asks Shelley.

Elders and Betters

The first series of Shelley saw a progression of the character. A layabout who is on the dole who realises he needs to sort himself out once he finds out he is to be a father.

So we see him get a job, find a best man for his impending wedding and now he dreads the prospect in meeting his father in law to be.

Of course the last two episodes of series one were shoved to series two and then shown out of order.

The episode is a tale of two halves. Shelley does the cooking at home and it seems he is better than Fran at it.

When he goes to a health food store he is shocked at the prices of the organic vegetables and the free range eggs. I doubt many people would had seen free range eggs in them days.

What we never see Shelley do is actually work since he got his job. He is down in the pub for an early pint reminiscing about his mother who seems to have had him young. It got in the way of her adolescence.

Then it is the train journey to see his father in law to be. He lives in a farmhouse and Mrs Goddard is the housekeeper and companion.

The father in law loathes Shelley, he thinks Shelley is only marrying Fran for the money she might inherit. However he is impressed by Shelley's cooking.

Shelley is on good form in this one with the cynical wisecracks about his mother. There is also great fun as everyone finishes Mrs Goddard's sentences.
