Very Clever Take on Something Several Television Series Have Done,
lesleyharris3026 August 2014
The Itchy and Scratchy and Poochie Show is a brilliant Simpsons episode with a very well written storyline and a ton of very funny scenes. The episode is very cleverly written and is a very smart take on what several television series have done to get the show better ratings, Poochie was a very legit way that a new character is introduced in a show, pops up out of nowhere and suddenly all the other characters instantly love him.I also really liked seeing Homer as the voice actor of Poochie and the writing room scenes for Itchy and Scatchy are some of the episodes highlights.Another great episode from the eight season (without a doubt my favourite season to date),the Itchy and Scratchy and Poochie Show is a funny and clever episode.

When ratings start going down, the writers of Itchy and Scratchy decide to add a new character to make things interesting, however Poochie the dog is unsuccessful with fans.

"The little dog nobody wanted"

Enter Poochie, the shrew attempt at boosting the limp ratings of Itchy and Scratchy. Focus-grouped and crassly emblematic of teens' "extreme!" culture, he ends up a cautionary tale; the Scrappy Doo, if you will.

'The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show' casts a keen eye on this most durable of TV tropes. It's hard not to identify with this, being an avid TV viewer for so many years. I know full well the hyper-scrutiny of a favorite show, and the fanboy outrage when that show deviates from the norm. It's a very clever episode; the jokes all land beautifully because we've all seen this first hand. It's a biting satire on the industry and the devotees that sustain.

Highly entertaining.

I withdraw my question

The Itchy & Scratchy producers try to introduce a new character to increase the cartoon's popularity.

This is a very strong episode with great satire.

The parody of the creative process is just as relevant within television and movie franchises today as it was in 1997. I love the depiction of the writers v producers dynamic and the problems caused when everything is driven by profits. Numerous comic book and sci-fi related franchises should take note that putting new characters into stories in an effort to stay relevant only works when they are good or at least likeable.

Another aspect I enjoy is the depiction of obsessive fans, such as the overly negative types who use platforms like IMDB to whinge about continuity, show finales and various other details of a make-believe world.

There are a lot of home truths in this one and it's done as humorously as ever.

Sometimes not being a kid anymore sucks but one of the few nice things about being a grown-up is I can understand subtle humor like the one in this episode.

There are so many layers like Poochie/Roy, those damn writers, "quality content after all these years", and so on...

A quote/misunderstanding which has some deep meaning

Okay so I was watching the episode The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show, and there was one minor part which caught my attention. It was when Jasper mistook Bart for being a girl. Bart's response is him asking if Jasper was blind, to which he said yes. I think that response carries some deeper meaning, as Bart himself is voiced by a female. With that logic, I think it's fair to Jasper that a blind person would mistake Bart for being a girl, as his only point of reference about him seems to be his voice, which is indeed coming from a girl.

You know, after thinking about this for a while, this might actually be the reason why Great Aunt Greta keeps mistaking Horrid Henry for him being a girl, because Henry's voice is also done by one as well.

Warning: Spoilers
This episode was quite controversial for the time because it appeared to rub up some Simpsons devotees up the wrong way judging from the old usenet forums in the late 90s. Anyway, the introduction of Poochie was kind of shorthand for the desperate measures that TV series take to save itself from cancellation.

Very witty this episode is.

Gone, but Not Forgotten

When those who produce the Itchy and Scratchy show realize it has gotten a bit long in the tooth, they try a new character. Poochie lays an egg and the show becomes terribly dull. Also, Homer is the voice of Poochie. This is different from some other episodes as Homer becomes a proactive employee. Of course, things aren't ever going to work out.
