- Mr Gleeson and Kathleen travel to Mansfield to collect an old friend who has travelled from England to visit him. When their carriage skids down an embankment, they find themselves stranded and injured in the bush.
- While traveling to Mansfield to meet a woman whom he has loved for over 19 years, Mr. Gleeson and Kathleen become stranded when a falling tree destroys their wagon. Meanwhile, Rob and Montana set off for a trip to the high country while Michael is determined to travel to Ireland to meet his grandfather.
- Michael ("Ben Geurens") receives a letter from his grandfather, inviting the boy to visit him in Dublin. Kathleen ("Wendy Hughes") however will not permit him to go, believing her fifteen year old son to be too young for such a long trip. However, Michael tells Danni ("Kristie Raymond")that he has resolved to travel to Ireland to see his grandfather, regardless of what his mother has said.
Meanwhile, Kathleen undertakes a journey of her own, accompanying James Gleeson ("Jon Finlayson") to the nearby town of Mansfield, where James is to be reunited with an old flame, Elizabeth ("Jackie Kelleher"), who he hasn't seen in almost twenty years. They are traveling in a horse and buggy along some rough back roads, and disaster strikes when a falling tree forces the vehicle off the road and down a ravine, spilling both passengers out in a perilous fall down the steep sides. Both are injured and a left without food or shelter during a rain storm and rapidly dropping temperature.
Rob ("Guy Pearce") and Montana ("Gabrielle Fitzpatrick") take a ride through the high country to see a mountain pass, with the aim of spending a little time getting to know each other better. Both of them have a tough time being honest about any romantic feelings they have, and it takes being marooned in a cattleman's hut during a raging storm to finally and tentatively bring the love they both have for each other out into the open. Kathleen and James trudge slowly through the bush, trying to find their way back to the track which lies at the top of the steep and slippery ravine. When they stop to rest, James tells Kathleen more about his relationship with his lady love, Elizabeth, and confesses that over the years he has written many letters to her in which he has somewhat embellished details of his life, having in fact made himself out to be something of an intrepid adventurer. Unknown to Kathleen he has one other secret he is keeping from her, namely the fact that he was more seriously injured in the accident than he has revealed.
When word comes from Mansfield that Kathleen and James didn't arrive, Matt, Colin ("Brett Climo") and Michael saddle up their horses and ride out in search of the missing waggon, but by the time they find the missing couple it is tragically too late for James and Paterson's Ridge says goodbye to one of its most-loved citizens.
