- Rob ("Guy Pearce") discovers a mute and emotionally unresponsive boy in the bush. The only clue to his identity is the name 'Josh' carved on a penknife he is carrying. Later Matt ("Andrew Clarke") and Rob discover a burned-out cabin in the woods, with the bodies of a man and a woman inside. Given that the boy smelled of smoke when he was found, and has a fear of fire, they surmise that the dead couple are the boy's parents. Colin ("Brett Climo") and Emily (Sheryl Munks") take Josh ("Daniel Daperis") in to look after him until government officials from Melbourne can take charge of him. Before long the couple start thinking about taking the boy in on a more permanent basis. However, Colin begins to have doubts after a series of arson attacks in the area, when all evidence points to the orphaned child, indicating that he is psychologically disturbed.
