The writers are facing a 'Barney Miller' moment.

We are only three episodes into the series it is easy to see that conflicts at the office is much more interesting that the relationship at home. The writers are doing their best to make a split but you can feel the anticipation and excitement of the office problems are much more interesting than home life. Just like in the series 'Barney Miller', which started out with a home life only to have the family written out in favor of office subject, this episode seems to be taking the same path.

In this episode, Mike is dealing with a crippling sanitation strike that is causing trouble all over the city. Mike is working nearly 24 hours a day to come to a deal with the union to settle the matter. But when Stuart schedules the Mayor to a ribbon cutting ceremony, the problem with the garbage hits an interesting note.

The situation with the strike, and how the characters handled the conflict, was some of the most entertaining clashes we have had in this new show. But when it came to Mike not spending time with his girlfriend, Ashley, it felt as though the show slowed to a halt. Already we, as viewers, want more of the office interaction than a simple love story. This is something the writers are going to have to face down the road.
