- The widow of respected scientist Dr. Nel Apgar accuses Riker of seducing her and killing her husband. Rather than turn Riker over for unfavorable trial, the Enterprise reconstructs the facts.
- Approaching the space station on planet Tanaga 4, the Enterprise gets a message from local Dr. Nel Apgar, but before he can speak it explodes. The ship is visited by the planet's chief investigator, who wants to arrest Commander William T. Riker for murder after he was overheard threatening Apgar, the accuser being his present widow, Manua Apgar. The captain refuses to extradite Riker to a legal system which operates on the presumption of guilt until proven innocent, so he allows only an investigation on board, for which Data provides ample technological assistance, reproducing the station on the holodeck. Riker had a secret mission there concerning the development of a low energy converter, and was seduced by his host's wife Manua Apgar, with whom the scientist 'cought' him. According to data from the planet, the fatal energy burst, of an unidentified nature, started from the spot Riker stood just at the time of his transporting to the Enterprise. After energy strikes on board, the truth is discovered...—KGF Vissers
- Commander Will Ryker is charged with murder after returning from a space station that exploded just as he was being beamed aboard the Enterprise. Before Captain Picard turns him over to the appropriate authorities however, he wants to examine all of the evidence. Using the holodeck, they recreate events from the perspective of those involved. As far as Ryker is concerned he acted properly throughout and did nothing wrong, When the dead man's wife testifies however, she insists that Ryker made improper advances towards her leading Ryker to kill her husband. It's up to Data and the others to find the solution to what really happened.—garykmcd
- Approaching the space station on planet Tanuga 4, the Enterprise gets a message from local Dr. Nel Apgar (Mark Margolis), but before she can speak it, the entire space station explodes. The Enterprise had delivered some equipment & Dicosilium to Dr Apgar, who was working on Kriger waves and a new source of power. Geordi and Riker were part of the away team. Geordi came back first and Riker later. Just before Riker was beamed over there was a power drain on the transporter and that's when the station exploded. Dr Apgar was the only one aboard the station when it exploded. The ship is visited by the planet's chief investigator Krag (Craig Richard Nelson), who wants to arrest Commander William T. Riker for murder after he was overheard threatening Apgar, the accuser being his present widow, Manua Apgar (Gina Hecht).
The captain refuses to extradite Riker to a legal system which operates on the presumption of guilt until proven innocent, so he allows only an investigation on board, for which Data provides ample technological assistance, reproducing the station on the Holodeck.
Riker presents his side of the story. He arrived with Geordi and was greeted by Nel and Manua. Nel is worried about Starfleet asking for an update on the Kreiger waves to energy converter since his delivery was not due for another 3 months. Enterprise had left (to pick them up the following day) and Riker and Geordi had plans to stay on the planet, but Manua insisted that Riker stays on the station. Riker was seduced by his host's wife Manua Apgar, with whom Nel 'caught' him. The next morning Nel meets Riker alone. Geordi has gone back to the Enterprise and Nel has sent Manua to the planet. Nel is worried about Riker reporting that Nel had no need for the extra Dicosilium. Riker says his report will not be altered and he beamed back to the Enterprise
Krag questions why Riker fired a phaser on board the station, but Riker says he never did. According to data from the planet, the fatal energy burst, of an unidentified nature, started from the spot Riker stood just at the time of his transporting to the Enterprise. Krag says Riker shot at the station's core with his phaser, causing it to explode. Manua testifies that Riker was aggressive with Nel from the start. He was checking out Manua the minute he laid eyes on her. It was his request to stay on the station. He tried to force himself on her in his cabin. He threatened Nel with a bad report, if he tries to mention the forced sex incident to anyone.
The mysterious energy strikes on board and causes radiation spikes in 2 separate areas (it eats through metal). The bursts are 5 hrs, 20 mins and 3 secs apart and periodic. Data and Wesley think they are connected to the Space Station explosion. Tayna (Juliana Donald), Nel's assistance is the next to testify. According to her Nel saw Riker kissing Manua. he punched Riker, who threatened him with death. Nel came out and asked Tayna to beam to Tanuga with Manua. Data and Wesley figure out that the energy field generator on Tanuga used in Nel's experiment generates a pulse every 5 hrs, 20 mins and 3 secs. It is a harmless lambda field generator and should not affect the enterprise.
Turns out the Holodeck (while replicating the station) also created an exact replica of the Kriger wave converter, which Nel claimed was not working. But it was working. These waves generated in the Holodeck were randomly striking different parts of the ship. Manua was greedy and wanted a life of wealth. Hence Nel claimed to Starfleet that the converter was not complete, and he would use the extra time to change it into a weapon & sell it to the Romulans or someone else. The extra Dicosilium was to create larger coils for a more powerful converter. Nel was worried Riker had figured all this out and decided to murder Riker. Nel generated the energy pulse at the exact moment of Riker's beam out, hoping to make it look like a transporter accident. But the energy pulse reflected off from the transporter and hit the converter itself, blowing it up. Nel killed himself while trying to kill Riker. Riker is free.
