- Riker celebrates his birthday and is revealed to be a terrible trombone player. As the Enterprise conducts a security sweep near the Neutral Zone in Onias sector, the ship is probed. Picard thinks there may be a secret Romulan base on the 3rd planet in the Onias system and pulls Riker from his birthday party to lead an away team. Scan reveals caverns made beneath the surface. Romulan activity is suspected.
After they're overcome by methane gas (during which Picard tried to beam them back), Riker awakens in Dr. Crusher's sick bay - and told it is 16 years after the incident, and he is the captain of Enterprise; Beverly tells Riker that 16 years ago he picked up an Altarian virus on the planet, which remained dormant for many years. But it activated suddenly 10 days ago, and Riker went into a coma. He has come out now and obviously the virus has wiped out Riker's memory to the point of first infection. Riker has been captain for the last 9 yrs.
Geordi has eyes. Worf manages helm with a Ferengi. Data is 1st officer. Picard and Deanna come aboard a Romulan vessel. They tell Riker how he helped a Romulan vessel 4 years ago, who had strayed into Federation space. Romulans were impressed and grateful. Treaty negotiations started and now only the final steps remain with the Romulan Ambassador. Riker is supposed to represent the Federation in the final negotiations. Riker also has a son Jean-Luc (Chris Demetral). Jean-Luc's mother Min died 2 years ago in a shuttle accident. Min was the ship's counselor after Picard offered Deanna a position at Starfleet command. The computer is slow for some reason, and Deanna tells Riker that Geordi is running a diagnostic.
Tomalak (Andreas Katsulas) is the Romulan ambassador. The final negotiations are to be on outpost 23. Riker takes Picard and Deanna aside and says outpost 23 is the key to all defenses in the neutral zone. Its location should not be disclosed to the Romulans. Picard says Outpost 23 is no longer strategically relevant. Riker speaks to Jean-Luc and tries to access their old family pics. The pics of his wife, Jean-Luc's mom are of Minuet (Carolyn McCormick), the Hologram program of the sexy red dress girl that distracted Riker during the incident involving the repairs of Enterprise on board the star base. Riker realizes that all that he is being shown is not real. He starts questioning everybody on the bridge and they can't answer his questions about their past, and their lack of "normal" abilities. Data can not think fast enough, Geordi taking 30 hours to complete a level 1 diagnostic, which takes 4 hours at best and so on. Finally, Tomalak reveals that Riker was on a Romulan simulator. Their objective was to find the location of Outpost 23. Tomalak says Geordi and Worf were allowed to transport back to the Enterprise, while Riker was brought to the base.
Riker is put in a cell with his "son" Jean-Luc. His real name is Ethan. Ethan shows Riker the secret routes into the forgotten tunnels in the Romulan base. He says he can get Riker to the shuttle bay. But Ethan refers to Tomalak as "Admiral". Riker realizes that this is a fantasy as well, and it wasn't the Romulans, it was the Boy Ethan who had created these fantasies.
Ethan reveals he is a life form who was left on the planet by his mother. Their planet was destroyed by their enemies. His mother built an advanced Holodeck with tech to protect her son. but she knew their enemies would not stop looking for them, hence she sacrificed herself to protect Ethan. Ethan had been living on the planet for many years, but was lonely and wanted something "real".. so he lured Enterprise to the planet and wanted to keep Riker with him. Ethan is an alien, whose real name is Barash. Riker takes Barash with him to the Enterprise.
