- Chuck Mitchell calls Ray and leaves a message on his machine, saying that he got into a deal with the devil and Ray told Chuck to call if he ever got into trouble. He asks Ray that if anything happens to him, Ray should make sure that everything he has goes to his daughter Ginny... and to tell her that he loves her.
Chuck's daughter Ginny is up on stage singing in a country bar,
Chuck is crop-dusting a field in his biplane, the Dust Devil I. A black helicopter intercepts him and a shooter inside, Crenshaw, opens fire on Chuck. The shooter hits the biplane's oil lines, and the aircraft goes down.
Ginny finishes her song, and the audience applauds. Ray comes over as Ginny sits down at a table, and she invites him to join her and buy her a drink. He introduces himself and tells her that she looks a lot like her father. Ginny abruptly gets and starts to go, and Ray tells her that her father is in trouble and missing. The woman says that she and her father parted company ten years ago, and Ray suggests that she start caring about Chuck.
Later, Ray drives Ginny to Chuck's place. Someone has torn the place up, and Ray figures that someone was intent on finding something even though Chuck didn't have any money. He asks Ginny if she has any idea, but she doesn't. They check Chuck's backup plane in the back, and Ginny insists that Chuck wasn't involved in drugs despite Ray's suspicions. When Ginny mentions that Chuck made frozen steaks for supper, Ray checks a nearby freezer and finds dozens of steaks cooked in advance. Ray checks the grill and finds a gold ingot inside worth $30,000.
Inside, Ray cleans off the ingot. Ginny drinks and says that what happened to Chuck isn't her problem. There's an overturned projector, and Ray sets it up and plays it. There are home videos of a young Ginny with her mother, Ginny watches the video and then turns the projector off, and Ray figures that it's hard to lose someone like her mother. Ginny says that it's all over and she doesn't want to dredge up the past, and doesn't want to be involved with anything in the present. Ray tells her that Chuck called her from Lovell County, and if Ginny needs him that's where he'll be. He says for Ginny to take care and leaves, and Ginny goes back to watching the film.
Later, Ray drives a semi into Lovell, fakes engine trouble, and stops at Potts Garage. Tank and Barbara run the place, and Crenshaw and two of his friends come out and tell Ray there's no gas or repairs for him there. Crenshaw casually insults Tank and Barbara advises Tank to back down. When Tank prepares to fight Crenshaw anyway, Barbara reminds them that Potts doesn't allow fighting there. Crenshaw tells Ray to fix his rig and move on, and leaves with his thugs. As they drive off, one of the men tosses a grenade under an old truck. Ray sees him and gets Barbara and Tank to cover as the grenade and the truck explode.
Barbara gives Ray a fire extinguisher to put out the flames. Once he does, she offers him a beer and Ray accepts. She says that she doesn't live in fear because she's used to life in Lovell where anything can happen. Ray suggests that they take a spin in the country in Barbara's 4x4. She smilingly refuses but offers to loan the 4x4 to Ray while she works on his semi.
Ray drives the 4x4 out into the country and spots a biplane overhead. He pulls over and sees that it's Chuck's backup plane, and Ginny is piloting it. The helicopter flies up and Crenshaw shooter prepares to take Ginny out of the air. Ray drives over as Ginny takes evasive action. Crenshaw shooter finally hits the biplane and it goes down, and Ginny manages to land the biplane in a field. She gets out and runs as the helicopter drops down, and Ginny finds the 4x4 and gets in. Ray drives off while Crenshaw and his pilot give up the pursuit rather than fly down the highway after them.
Later on the road, Ginny tells Ray that he said some things that she didn't want to hear and she decided to face up to it. Ray says that she was reckless enough to fly over the fields, and points out that between the vineyards are tons of marijuana. Ginny works out that the men involved would shoot down any plane flying over their fields, and Ray figures that's why Chuck got killed. He also figures Chuck wasn't working for the growers, and shows Ginny a bill for pool acid he found at Chuck's house. Ray figures that Chuck was spraying it on the fields because he worked for one grower trying to eliminate the competition.
Ray and Ginny drive into town, and spot Crenshaw and his men walking around with revolvers. One of them shoots out a streetlamp and the others cheer. Ray tells Ginny to stay in the 4x4 while he asks some questions, but Ginny insists on going with him. He tells her to lock the doors and stay put, and goes into a nearby bar. The customers are using heroin and marijuana, and shooting pool. The bartender tells Ray that it's neutral ground and he should hand over his gun if he has one, and Ray says that he's just there to get a beer. Once the bartender gives him a beer, the man says that they keep the cops off their backs by killing them.
The bartender offers Ray a free joint, and Ray sees Ginny come in. She goes over to Ray and claims to be his wife, and orders. Ray suggests that they go out of the way and sit at a table, and once they do Ray tells Ginny to sit there. Back at the bar, Ray tells the bartender that Ginny was hitchhiking to Lovell to look for Chuck. The bartender claims he hasn't seen Chuck around, then goes back to the table and Ginny flirting with the pool players. The bartender makes a call, and when one of the pool players misses the shot he bet Ginny on, Ray comes over and leads Ginny outside. Meanwhile, the bartender calls to two of the pool players, Haggart and Hicks, and gives them guns.
Outside, Haggart and Hicks follow Ray and Ginny Crenshaw and his men are are waiting for them, and Crenshaw pistol-whips Ray unconscious from behind, and then asks him why he's asking questions about Chuck. Crenshaw recognizes Ginny from the biplane earlier, and she mentions that Chuck was her father. Crenshaw asks where Rollin Banjo is, and Ginny tells him that she doesn't know any Banjo.
Ray tells Crenshaw that Ginny is telling the truth, and Crenshaw kicks him and repeats his question. When Ray doesn't answer, Crenshaw beats him. A rival gang of growers drive up the street and open fire, and Ray breaks free and takes out the men holding him. While Ray leads Ginny down an alley, Crenshaw and his men return fire until their attackers drive off.
Ray checks himself and Ginny into a motel, and Ray calls in a favor with one of his former clients, Terry Haslow. Terry agrees to break off his undercover work to help Ray get a list of DEA contacts with Banjo's name on it. Once Ray hangs up, Ginny continues drinking and says that Chuck told her she'd never amount to anything. She insists that she's dealing with the world perfectly fine, and Ray tells her life isn't a game and a loser is a person who doesn't take responsibility for anything.
When Ginny says that she hasn't care about herself in a long time, Ray asks what she would do if she had a father who cared for her more than anything. Ginny admits that it would change a lot of things and Ray agrees.
Later, Terry calls back and tells Ray where he can make contact with "The Jogger", a local DEA agent who can direct Ray to Banjo. Ray goes to the garage and gets his Stingray out of the bank, and drives to the rendezvous. The Jogger is Barbara, who says that she got a call from DC to meet Ray. Barbara knows that Chuck was poisoning Richard Lovell's crops, and figure that Chuck is probably dead. She tells Ray to go home, warning that one wrong move could ruin her operation and get her killed. Undeterred, Ray asks about Banjo, and Barbara tells him that Banjo is bad news. She advises Ray to look in Black Rock Canyon and jogs away.
Ray drives to the canyon with Ginny, and refuses to tell her the Jogger's identity. He is keeping Ginny with him because he wants to keep her safe. Ray tells Ginny to stay with the Stingray while he looks for Banjo, and Ginny points out that two people can cover more ground than one. He refuses to let her come along, and Ginny tells him to be careful.
Moving through the woods, Ray avoids Banjo's traps.
Ginny gets impatient and goes to the edge of the road, calling to Ray. Someone grabs her from behind.
Ray spots a man checking the marijuana, grabs the man, and finds Banjo nearby. Tank brings Ginny in, and Ginny says that she's looking for her father, Chuck. Banjo admits that he hired Chuck and that Chuck still owes him $30,000 worth of work.
Ray releases his hostage, figuring that Banjo can't kill them because he needs them to find Chuck and the $40,000. Banjo figures that Chuck is still alive and his main competitor is Lovell. He tells Ray to go to Lovell and get Chuck back for him, or Ginny dies.
That night, Ray drives to Lovell's winery and sneaks in. He finds a hidden greenhouse full of marijuana, searches further, and finds Chuck's flight BAG. Ray then breaks into Lovell's bedroom draws a gun, and wakes the man up. He tells Lovell that he wants Chuck, and once Lovell talks, Ray calls Barbara and says that Lovell is holding Chuck in a line shack on the edge of the property. Once Barbara hangs up, she rolls over to Banjo who is in her bed and tells Banjo that Ray found Chuck.
The next morning, Crenshaw tells the captive Chuck that he saw Ginny flying a plane. Crenshaw asks Chuck for the location of Banjo's camp, and Chuck tells him that he was hired by phone and hasn't seen his former friend in over 20 years. Chuck begs Crenshaw to tell him if Ginny is all right. Outside, a white van pulls up to the line shack, and Crenshaw hears its engine. Lovell gets out and demands to talk to Crenshaw, and Crenshaw comes with Chuck and tells Lovell that he doesn't have time to talk. The dealer tells Crenshaw that he needs to discuss a few things with him in the van.
Crenshaw gets in the van with Lovell, and Ray draws a gun at Crenshaw and tells him to set his gun down on the floor. When Crenshaw drops his gun, Lovell goes for it and the three men struggle. Lovell is shot and falls out of the van, and Crenshaw gets out and takes cove. Crenshaw's men open fire on the van.
Once they're done firing, Crenshaw looks at Lovell's corpse. As he goes to the van door, Ray jumps out of the bushes, takes down the two thugs, and Crenshaw comes over and fights him. After finally knocking Crenshaw out, Chuck comes over and greets his friend. Banjo and his men pull up with Barbara and Ginny, and Ginny goes to her father to make sure he's okay.
Ray realizes that Barbara is a mole for Banjo. Federal drug agents arrive and tell everyone to freeze, and Barbara realizes that Ray knew all along that she was working for Banjo.
Terry comes over and Ray thanks him. Barbara and Banjo escape and drive off in a police car, and Ray tells Terry that he'll handle it. He drives after the two fugitives, and they go off a cliff and crash into a lake far below. Ray parks and watches the car go down with Barbara and Banjo trapped inside of it.
Later, Chuck is working on his biplane and listening to Ginny's song, and Ginny and Ray join him. The pilot insists that one day Ginny's song will be at the top of the charts, and that he's going to be around a long time now that he has something to look forward to. Smiling, Ray drives off.
