Jim Hardie is sent to Buffalo Creek, Kansas to check on a buffalo hide buyer, Fresno Keeley, that Wells Fargo is backing. His loads of buffalo hides paid for with Wells Fargo money have been stolen three times but he can't identify the thieves. Upon his arrival in the area Jim stops at the Ben Thompson camp. Ben is a well known gambler from Texas who has a brother Billy in the area. Jim aids Ben when a fight breaks out over his faro game while Jim is waiting to see if Ben has seen Fresno. Ben is no help so Jim checks with the reluctant railroad agent on who is shipping hides. The information has him believing Henry Wilson, another hide dealer, is behind the trouble with Billy Thompson involved. Jim finds Fresno tied up after another robbery and the two decide to set a trap.
