Due to the absence of Suzanne Somers in this episode show writers, in a hurry to rewrite the script, realized that they could give all the lines written for Chrissy to Mr. Furley. Don Knotts has stated that when Suzanne's contract dispute began the writers realized that Mr. Furley could take on some of the craziness that had been part of her character. With Somers departure from the series writers began writing a little zanier for Don Knotts which ended up being a windfall for his character.
This episode marks the first show that Suzanne Somers did not show up for the taping of. Somers has been in negotiations with ABC and series producers to renegotiate her contract. With both sides at an impasse Somers took to rehearsing episodes of the show but would then fail to show up for the episode taping, leaving cast and crew to find a way to work around her at the last minute. This would kick off her very public and contentious dispute between herself, the show producers, and ABC.
The title is based on the last line the the American Pledge of Allegiance "...and justice for all."
